Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Vice President for Business and Finance, the Associate Controller’s primary responsibilities include producing and managing financial reports and related processes.  Accountable for accurate and timely preparation of audited financial statements. Accountable for developing an expert level of understanding of all balance sheet line items in order to provide expert guidance and continued enhancements of processes, as well as regulatory changes. Ensures proper accounting and execution of transactions related to capital projects, endowment, debt, and on-going university operations. Serves as primary liaison to and coordinator of the annual audits, prepares the Board of Trustees Audit Committee agenda and presents the university financial statements.   

Develops an understanding of the financial operation and directs activities in the absence of the Controller. Represents the accounting office and finance division on a variety of committees with a diverse range of faculty, staff, or students. 

Other specific responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, managing compliance with donor restrictions and with Illinois UPMIFA; directing and coordinating the preparation of audit lead schedules, financial statements and footnotes; guiding the work necessary to provide financial information for various surveys and reports.

Responsible for the effective supervision of staff, including the selection of qualified individuals in hiring. Encourages high productivity and efficiency, while holding employees accountable for producing professional quality work that is timely and accurate.

Professional Experience/ Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3 years working experience in higher education accounting or knowledge of not-for-profit accounting. 5 years preferred. 
  • Ability to direct a chart of accounts in a manner that supports effective reporting and analysis.
  • Deep knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles, tax compliance, and audit
  • Experience with process evaluation and redesign when warranted. 
  • Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines. 
  • Knows best practice financial operations in higher education and applies them.
  • A strong service commitment, with the ability to balance controls while meeting the need of stakeholders. 
  • Strong problem-solving, curiosity, and resourcefulness to research and resolve problems. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in written forms. 
  • Spreadsheet skills necessary to prepare, analyze and present financial results.
  • A commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Colleague, Banner or other electronic database management account system experience preferred. 
  • AICPA Non-Profit I and II Certifications, preferred

Education

  • A bachelor's degree in business, accounting or finance.

Certifications

  • Active CPA certification, required.
