Job Summary

The departments of Aerospace Engineering Sciences (AES), Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences (APS), and Physics are conducting a joint search for a three-year, fixed-term Visiting Faculty position to be rostered in one of the three departments depending on the candidate’s background and interests. It is anticipated that the position will begin in spring or summer 2022, with teaching obligations starting fall 2022.

We seek applications from candidates whose research focus will enable improvements in predictions of space weather phenomena or its effects on technological systems through advancements in satellite systems, instrumentation, observations, theory, or modeling. Applicants spanning a broad range of research areas related to solar physics, space sciences, or aerospace engineering will be considered. We have a particular interest in candidates whose research will benefit from, or contribute to, the goals of the National Solar Observatory (NSO), which is headquartered at the University of Colorado Boulder and operates the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope as well as the National Integrated Synoptic Program that provides operational space weather data to NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center. While the general focus of the position relates to the processes that create and control space weather conditions, a research focus on long- or short-term solar influences on the earth’s space environment (including magnetosphere, ionosphere, thermosphere, or mesosphere) and aerospace systems (including cislunar, HEO, GEO, MEO, or LEO) is also highly valued.

We seek candidates who will develop and conduct an innovative research program, who have a dedication to teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and who share our commitment to supporting a diverse student population. The successful candidate will play a leading role in the Hale Collaborative Graduate Education program (COLLAGE), which uses remote learning to bring students and faculty from different campuses together for a collaborative research and classroom experience, . The visiting faculty position will have duties similar to those of other faculty members within their rostered department.

The successful candidate will be appointed for a three-year term as a visiting faculty member and will report to the chair of the department that best fits the candidate’s background and interests. The appointment is not a tenured or tenure-track position. What We Can Offer

Salary will be commensurate with experience; a starting salary range of $80,000 – $105,000 is expected. This salary is for a 9-month academic period. Summer month activities are at the applicant’s discretion and externally funded projects can be used as a means to cover their summer salary. A startup fund of $25,000 is available, from which up to $8,000 can be used for moving expenses. What We Require

Candidates must have an earned Ph.D. or equivalent degree, or expect to have completed their Ph.D. at the time of starting the appointment, in a field appropriate to their home department or program.

What You Will Need

The successful candidate would have demonstrated independent research experience in solar physics, space science, or aerospace engineering with an emphasis on space. Good communication skills and an interest in developing new methods for remote learning are desirable.

What We Would Like You To Have

Prior teaching experience will be viewed as a strength but is not required for consideration. Demonstrated research or operational experience in space weather processes or its effects on technological systems will be highly valued.
