The Department of Linguistics at the University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign is searching for a full-time tenure stream
Assistant or Associate Professor who can contribute to the growing
demand in our Sociolinguistics and TESL programs through an active
research profile in sociolinguistics of globalization understood in
a broad and inclusive sense.
We are interested in scholars active in the areas of
sociolinguistics, multilingualism, and/or Indigenous/minority
languages/dialects in the U.S., with a strong TESL background. The
candidate will help train students in the MATESL program, the BA in
Linguistics and TESL launched in Fall 21, as well as the
undergraduate and graduate programs in Linguistics. We are seeking
a scholar who has demonstrated promise for a vibrant research
program, disciplinary and interdisciplinary collaboration, and has
a proven record of student mentoring and teaching.
The candidate will teach graduate and undergraduate courses,
supervise student research, and develop a high-impact research
program. They will be able to develop and teach courses in areas
such as the sociolinguistics of multilingualism, language in
globalization, language minorities, linguistic diversity in the US,
World Englishes, and language in social media. The candidate will
also teach courses in the core MATESL curriculum, preferably a
course on the theoretical foundations, and essential methodologies
and technologies needed to train graduate students to engage the
paradigm of World Englishes in TESL.
The candidate must have a Ph.D. in Linguistics, Applied
Linguistics, Sociolinguistics, Second Language Studies, or a
related field. The candidate should have a strong background in
Sociolinguistics and TESL. An MA in TESL or related field is
strongly preferred. Candidates should have a demonstrated record of
excellence in undergraduate and/or graduate teaching, and an
independent research program by the targeted start date, which is
August 16, 2022. Salary is commensurate with rank and
qualifications.
The Department of Linguistics is a vibrant and comprehensive
department with about 200 undergraduate majors, 70 graduate
students, 17 tenure-stream and more than 30 teaching/specialized
faculty members. Together we represent a broad spectrum of research
interests and boast highly successful pedagogy programs in ESL and
the Less Commonly Taught Languages.
Candidates with a documented commitment to working with students or
faculty from groups historically marginalized or underrepresented
in the field through teaching, mentoring, or administration are
especially encouraged to apply.
