The Department of Chemistry at New Mexico Tech (NMT) invites applications for two tenure-track Assistant Professor of Chemistry positions, with appointment to begin Fall 2022. Each successful candidate will establish an independent, externally funded research program supporting students at the graduate and undergraduate levels. The successful candidates will also teach introductory and intermediate chemistry courses, as well as graduate courses in their area of expertise. Training in any area of chemistry will be considered. Preference may be given to candidates with research specialization in biomedical areas, especially biophysical chemistry, synthetic chemistry (such as organometallic or medicinal), and toxicology. A PhD in chemistry or a closely related field, such as biophysics or biochemistry, is required at the time of application; postdoctoral experience is expected.

The department’s research strengths are in biomedical chemistry and atmospheric/environmental chemistry. We especially seek candidates to complement our biomedical program, in which current faculty have interests in DNA damage repair, transport and localization of biomolecules, disease detection, and environmental toxicology. Research techniques used by current faculty include experimental biochemistry and cell biology; microfluidics and

biosensing; molecular biophysics and computational chemistry; synthesis of nanoparticles and porous materials; and experimental atmospheric modeling. We encourage applicants who can develop strong connections with Sandia and Los Alamos National Laboratories. Our faculty value excellence in attentive instruction and expect successful candidates with great enthusiasm for mentoring and teaching. We are particularly interested in applicants comfortable teaching organic or physical chemistry. Candidates should also help us attract more students at the graduate and undergraduate levels. Our faculty regularly engage undergraduates in mentored research, along with graduate students. We have well-established graduate programs, including master’s, accelerated master’s, and PhD pathways.

For best consideration, please apply by December 1, 2021. Candidates must complete an online application and electronically attach a single PDF document, incorporating all of the following: cover letter highlighting expertise and experience most suited to the position; curriculum vitae (CV); statement of research interests and approach; statement of teaching interests; and list of three to five professional references. Materials should be sent to nmtjobapps@npe.nmt.edu c/o Rosa Jaramillo and copied to Menake Piyasena (sesathpura.piyasena@nmt.edu, with “APChem2022” in the e-mail subject line). Inquiries should also be directed to Menake Piyasena.
