The University of Virginia, School of Nursing (SON) is looking for an inspiring leader and cultural visionary to join our academic leadership team as an Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at our prestigious Charlottesville, Virginia campus. 

 

This is an extraordinary tenure-track position that will allow you to serve as a strategic partner to the Dean and Dean’s Council developing and implementing initiatives that promote cultural awareness, equity consciousness and inclusivity into the heart of our School’s mission. In this role, you’ll be enhancing an established IDEA — our Inclusion Diversity and Excellence Achievement plan. IDEA sets the foundation for our five-year plan to foster the pursuits of excellence within our academic community by nurturing an enriching campus culture built around diversity, respect, inclusivity, understanding and acceptance. 
 
This role will allow you to: 

  • Lead the implementation, oversight and evaluation of the SON Inclusive Excellence Strategic Plan. 
  • Collaborate with the VP of DEI and other department Associate Deans of DEI to expand diversity in all academic programs using best practices in recruitment, holistic admissions, orientation and student support. 
  • Facilitate advancement of DEI in processes and policies, including in faculty and staff search, tenure and promotion for tenure track faculty, and promotion and renewal for general track faculty. 
  • Provide training opportunities for faculty, staff and students to develop capacity for equity literacy and practice. 
  • Foster a climate of equity and respect and a sense of belonging for all by offering training opportunities in inclusive practices in teaching and best practices to create inclusive learning environments. 
  • Lead curricula assessment with a DEI lens and assist faculty in embedding DEI principles and content in courses and curricula. 
  • Support student engagement activities to promote inclusivity and a sense of belonging, affirmation and well-being. Provide support and guidance to underrepresented students. Lead ongoing assessment of the school’s climate. 
  • Serve in a consulting role to faculty and Office of Academic and Student Services staff to assist with students experiencing difficulty or when inclusivity is breached in the classroom or clinical arena. 
  • Engage with alumni and the school’s foundation office. 
  • Fulfill research, teaching and service responsibilities commensurate with the tenure track. 
  • Pursue opportunities to joint appointments. 

 

Successful candidates for this position should possess the following qualifications, certifications and experience: 

  • PhD in Nursing or terminal degree in a field related to nursing.  
  • Current Virginia RN license or eligibility for VA licensure.  
  • Extensive experience developing and leading DEI initiatives. 
  • Teaching experience and proven ability to cultivate scholarship within one of the SON’s areas of research excellence, such as Palliative/End of Life Care, Violence, Symptom Science, Data Science, Nursing History, Compassionate Care or Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. 
  • Proven ability to manage and secure external funding sources and partnerships. 
  • Experience with community engagement activities, such as research initiatives, medical practice or service.
