Job Summary

The Wellness/Health Promotion Coordinator (WHPC) - Alcohol, Tobacco, and other Drugs (ATOD) is responsible for developing strong, evidence-based, data-driven programs and services based on relevant and measurable learning outcomes to improve individual and community health behaviors and status in the Student Wellness Center (SWC). The WHPC - ATOD is responsible for individual, group, and population-based health education/counseling for SJSU students and expected to integrate multicultural and social justice concepts and principles into health promotion services. The WHPC-ATOD co-coordinates the peer educator program, which includes paid and volunteer students who provide 1:1 peer advising, workshops, and outreach events for the SJSU student body. The anticipated primary specialty area of responsibility is alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs education; however, other assignments could include violence prevention, sexual wellness, stress management/healthy lifestyles, men’s health, multicultural health issues, and/or body image. Working collaboratively to support student success is the bottom line purpose of this and all SWC positions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate to plan, implement, and evaluate theory and evidence based health promotion strategies, policies, programs, and services.
  • Consult with the supervisor to develop strategic plans, goals, and measurable objectives for programs and services in alignment with goals and objectives of the University, Division of Student Affairs, Student Wellness Center, and Wellness and Health Promotion.
  • Maintain and develop current resources, including online resources and media, useful for serving students (staff and faculty) and accomplishing program goals.
  • Monitor and manage financial resources allocated to program with possible grant writing and oversight.
  • Collaborate in supervising and evaluating paid/volunteer Peer Educators
  • Collaborate to promote programs and services to the campus community using traditional marketing methods and emerging technologies.
  • Support student success through the oversight and delivery of presentations, programs, events, and trainings that address a variety of health and wellness topics.
  • Oversee and provide workshops and “tabling” efforts aimed at at-risk students including: first year students, historically underserved, LGBT, etc.
  • Design, and/or select, and distribute educational materials (e.g., brochures, flyers) tailored to meet the needs of the diverse SJSU student population.
  • Provide advising, counseling, and education on a variety of subject areas, specifically alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs, to assist students in learning about and appreciating the importance of health.
  • Apply evidence-based strategies aimed at reducing risky health behavior while coaching students on development/awareness of the effects of lifestyle choices on health status.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Thorough knowledge of: health education theories, research, and program assessment; planning, design, implementation, and evaluation of health education programs; and industry standards for the delivery of health education in higher education.
  • General knowledge of current and emerging college age student health issues and demonstrated knowledge of related evidence-based health promotion interventions, including interventions that address individual and population-based behavioral change.
  • Ability to incorporate preventive health principles when counseling students.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of Private Health Information and appropriately handle sensitive communications with students, staff, and external agencies.
  • Ability to collaborate with colleagues and other key stakeholders to develop a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to health education for students.
  • Knowledge of the Socio-ecological Model and how to incorporate universal, selective, and indicated prevention strategies.
  • Ability and skill to organize, promote, and facilitate public meetings and to prepare, select, assemble, evaluate, and utilize educational materials.
  • Ability to write and manage grants.
  • Ability to mentor Peer Educators with an emphasis on individual strengths while coaching on areas for improvement.
  • Ability to link student work to internships, fieldwork, academic coursework, and/or career goals. .
  • Knowledge of social marketing and health communication strategies.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent customer service and public relations skills.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in an approved program in health education or a related health field
  • Equivalent to one to two years of progressively responsible health education experience or combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience coordinating a peer educator program
  • Experience in community health education in non-profit, clinic and public health settings
  • Experience designing, organizing, implementing, and evaluating effective programming
  • Experience with student development and student retention theories
  • Experience providing health education in the area of Violence Prevention, and in one or more of the following areas: Sexual Wellness, Alcohol & other Drugs, Men’s/Women’s Health, and/or Multicultural Health.
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Experience mentoring students
  • Experience providing health education in the area of Alcohol, Tobacco & other Drugs.


Compensation

Classification: Health Educator
Anticipated Hiring Range: $5,948/month - $6,000/month
Salary Range: $4,060/month - $7,836/month
