Job Summary
Reporting to the Director of the Institute for Water and Health, the Coordinator of Community Engagement and Outreach will support the institute's mission to advance understanding of complex interactions between water resources and human activities to protect and restore their health in a changing environment. The institute is a research and education unit, fostering collaboration and capacity building among our faculty, other academic institutions, government agencies, industry, nonprofit organizations, and communities.

Responsibilities
  • Perform related duties as assigned to support the mission of the University
  • Develop and implement community engagement plans required for IWH research activities
  • Implement water and health educational programs targeted for local communities
  • Develop and implement effective science communication strategies
  • Work closely with relevant stakeholders, in particular local environmental groups and non-profit organizations to advance community networks for the IWH
  • Identify extramural funding to support outreach activities
  • Guide the Georgia Southern communications and marketing team in building and implementing a communication and marketing plan for the institute
  • Monitor and report community outreach metrics and opportunities for community engagement and education
  • Assist with preparing annual progress reports to the Vice Provost for Research

Required Qualifications
Educational Requirements
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, Environmental Sciences or related field

Other Required Qualifications
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, ArcGIS, Adobe Design Suite, Mat Lab and other relevant design and database software

Required Experience
  • Five years of experience in developing citizen science and community education activities in environmental sciences
  • Five years of experience in field experience specifically in water quality monitoring
  • Five years of experience in designing effective science communication materials
  • Three years of experience in federal, state, municipal, non-profit groups, and private citizens on water quality education, coalition building, and capital project implementation

Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Educational Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Environmental Sciences or related field

Preferred Experience
  • Proven service activities in environmental justice

Additional Preferred Qualifications
  • Training in Environmental Policy and Ethics
  • Intermediate level Spanish language
  • Motorboat operation certificate

Proposed Salary
$50,000 - $57,200
