The Department of Performing Arts invites applications for an Assistant Professor (tenure track) or Artist-in-Residence (full-time term faculty) in Movement for Actors.
The Department seeks candidates who can contribute to the excellence and diversity of the academic community through ongoing engagement with students both inside and outside of the classroom. The appointment begins August 18, 2022 with a mandatory 2-day orientation August 18 & 19, 2022.

The Department of Performing Arts is home to one of the nation's leading programs in theatrical performance, design, stage management, and theatre education. With a team of 97 full- and part-time faculty and theatre staff members, the department enrolls 526 students in nine distinct undergraduate programs and one graduate program. The department offers B.F.A. degrees in Theatre Design/Technology, Stage & Production Management, Musical Theatre, Acting, Theatre, Theatre & Performance, Theatre Education, and Theatre Education & Performance. Emerson Stage, the producing organization of the department, presents nine fully staged major productions annually in five theatres, with additional production opportunities available to our students through ArtsEmerson, our nationally and internationally-recognized professional presenting company. Emerson is also home to Howlround Theatre Commons.

Qualifications:

The candidate must hold an MFA degree, or a bachelor's degree with significant professional experience in movement-based performance. The candidate must specialize in movement for actors, and have experience teaching movement for actors on the college level or in a conservatory setting. Teaching methodologies and a philosophy that draws on a range of movement approaches, fosters basic physical and self-awareness, collaboration, imagination, and provides the bridge between the internal life of the actor and physical expression are essential.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Primary teaching duties include first-year introductory and upper-level movement for actors courses in the BFA Theater & Performance and BFA Acting programs. Additional responsibilities include academic advising, student mentorship, assisting in the admission audition process, advising on Emerson Stage productions, and serving on department and college committees. Candidates should be able to address issues of race and representation in all of their courses. The department is engaged in identifying and removing barriers to admission for working-class students and students of color. The successful candidate will bring expertise to this dialogue. Our ideal candidate will also possess a keen and developed awareness of the issues around diversity, inclusion, and equity within the classroom, and within the profession. The candidate should have facility with culturally responsive pedagogies and approaches, and possess a fluid overall pedagogy that is able to adapt and expand as the cultural conversation around representation, privilege-based difference, and inclusive excellence continues to evolve.
