Assistant Professor Costume Design
Join our community and experience Emerson College!

The Department of Performing Arts at Emerson College seeks a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor of Costume Design in the BFA Program in Theatre Design/Technology. The Department seeks candidates who can contribute to the excellence and diversity of the academic community through ongoing engagement with students both inside and outside of the classroom in addition to traditional creative accomplishment/research, teaching, and service. The appointment begins August 18, 2022 with a mandatory 2-day orientation August 18 & 19, 2022.

Emerson College is committed to an active, intentional, and ongoing engagement with diversity—in people, in the curriculum, in the co-curriculum, and in the College's intellectual, social, cultural, and geographical communities. Emerson endorses a framework of inclusive excellence, which recognizes that institutional excellence comes from fully engaging with diversity in all aspects of institutional activities. Emerson is committed to strengthening communities, including our workplace, by fostering the development of the intercultural competencies necessary for meaningful citizenship in an increasingly complex, pluralistic society.

The Department of Performing Arts is home to one of the nation's leading undergraduate programs in theatrical performance and design, with 97 full- and part-time faculty members and staff and 526 majors across all disciplines. The department offers BFA degrees in Theatre Design/Technology, Stage & Production Management, Musical Theatre, Acting, Theatre, Theatre & Performance, Theatre Education, and Theatre Education & Performance. Emerson Stage presents nine fully- staged major productions annually in five theatres, with additional production opportunities available to our students through ArtsEmerson, our nationally and internationally-recognized professional presenting company. Emerson is also home to Howlround Theatre Commons.

Emerson College is the nation's only four-year institution dedicated exclusively to majors in communication and the arts in a liberal arts context. Its main campus is located in the center of the dynamic multicultural city of Boston, in the heart of Boston's downtown Theatre District. The college also has campuses in Los Angeles and the Netherlands. Emerson College enrolls over 5,100 graduate and undergraduate students from more than 58 countries and all 50 states.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities for this position include teaching the following courses and studios in our recently redesigned design/tech BFA curriculum: Foundations of Design,

The History of Fashion and Decor (team-taught with a Scenic Designer), Costume Design I, Collaboration Studio, and/or one or more of the following: Costume Construction, Makeup for Theatre and Media, Costume Crafts, etc.

In addition, the candidate will design annually for Emerson Stage— the producing organization for the Department of Performing Arts. The successful candidate will model a collaborative creative process in accordance with the highest level of professional standards and practice, work effectively with our professional staff in the Costume Shop, and mentor student assistant designers.

Additional responsibilities include mentoring 6-8 Costume Design students annually, academic advising, assisting in the admission portfolio review process, and serving on department and college committees.

Candidates should be able to address issues of race and representation in all of their courses. The department is engaged in identifying and removing barriers to admission for working-class students and students of color. The successful candidate will bring expertise to this dialogue. Our ideal candidate will also possess a keen and developed awareness of the issues around diversity, inclusion, and equity within the classroom, and within the profession. The candidate should have facility with culturally responsive pedagogies and approaches, and possess a fluid overall pedagogy that is able to adapt and expand as the cultural conversation around representation, privilege-based difference, and inclusive excellence continues to evolve.

We encourage applications from candidates who use theatre to expose power relationships and oppressive practices that are normalized in dominant culture and who explore race, gender, sexuality, and class dynamics through their work. Candidates must have demonstrated ability to work effectively with faculty, students, and staff from diverse backgrounds. An ability to work and teach collaboratively, and a strong commitment to undergraduate education beyond the classroom are essential. Members of underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have an MFA degree in costume design or a related field or a BFA in costume design and significant professional experience equivalent to an MFA degree. Candidates should have previous experience teaching costume design within a diverse learning community on the college level and successfully designing for an academic presenting organization. Experience in costume design for television and film is an asset as is membership in United Scenic Artists, Local 829. The ability to teach traditional design skills along with the ability to teach costume construction or effectively supervise construction are required. Expertise in digital rendering via Photoshop, Illustrator, or Procreate, as well as additional skills in teaching stage makeup and costume crafts are desirable. The successful candidate must have clearly defined artistic concepts and strategies evinced by a record of professional achievement in costume design for the theatre that includes regional or national recognition.
