The American Musical and Dramatic Academy (AMDA), College of the Performing Arts is a post-secondary performing arts institution with campuses in New York City and Los Angeles. For the past 56 years, AMDA has been a leader in the field of performing arts higher education with innovative and creative programs for emerging artists. AMDA's Degree and Certificate Programs support, teach, and guide artists focused in all areas of the performing arts including acting, singing, dancing, content creation, writing, and producing. Today, AMDA continues to be on the cutting edge of performing arts higher education and is one of the premier performing arts institutions in the world!

The AMDA NY Campus, is searching for a dynamic and visionary Vice President of Academic Affairs who will support the institution’s mission and philosophy in guiding and educating emerging performing artists. The incumbent will provide leadership for approximately 250 faculty and staff members and be directly responsible for the outcomes of AMDA NY’s unique Certificate Programs. They will be responsible for planning, directing, evaluating, and developing academic programs; supervising academic staff; collaborating with other staff and faculty members to analyze and provide recommendations in response to evolving issues; and provide leadership in developing and achieving strategic initiatives using available data points for critical analysis. The Vice President will ensure that students receive a high quality education by encouraging excellence in teaching, leadership, and service among the faculty. The Vice President will report directly to the Provost and Chief Academic Officer for both NY and LA and will work collaboratively with the Executive Team.

Primary Responsibilities

Overarching:

  • Support and uphold the philosophy, goals, and missions of AMDA.
  • Uphold and contribute to AMDA’s culture of continuous assessment and improvement.
  • Lead quality assurance and improvement processes, including AMDA’s cycle of Program Reviews.
  • Contribute to evaluation of the need for new programs and contribute to their development.
  • Play a leadership role in strategic academic planning.
  • Promote shared governance and a highly collaborative environment.
  • Safeguard program continuity.
  • Collaborate with the Executive and Senior Leadership Teams in developing and upholding academic policies and procedures.
  • Collaborate with Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Department to uphold standards of Overall Program Cultural Competency.
  • Work across academic departments to ensure adherence to accreditation standards.
  • Ensure that AMDA is in compliance with pertinent federal, state, and local laws as related to academic affairs.
  • Employ a data-driven and research-based approach to decision making.
  • Serve as an inspiring instructional leader.
  • Remain active in the performing arts industry to ensure that academic programs remain current and impactful.
  • Support the Education Department as needed.
  • Assist with student recruitment, admissions, and retention.

Division Chair Supervision:

  • Supervise and evaluate Division Chairs.
  • Collaborate across Divisions Chairs and faculty members to develop effective Program Learning Outcomes mapping and Curricular Learning Outcome alignment across the curriculum.
  • Collaborate with Division Chairs to facilitate the curricular proposal, review, and approval process.
  • Hold regularly-scheduled planning meetings with Division Chairs and Academic Department Directors.

Academic Department Related:

  • Contribute to the development of Division Budgets and the overall Academic Budget.
  • Contribute to collaborative annual review of faculty and academic staff (Faculty, Division Chairs, and Academic Department Directors).
  • Active involvement in faculty advancement.
  • Design and deliver appropriate and insightful academic reports.
  • Collaborate with Education Leadership to ensure effective academic advising.
  • Oversight and Management of Faculty Mentors for Student Advisement.
  • Provide leadership in the recruitment and hiring of highly qualified faculty members.
  • Contribute to the professional development of faculty and academic leaders.
  • Academic dismissal committee participant.
  • Create and lead a series of professional development experiences for academic faculty and staff.
  • Committee development and faculty assignment participation.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Terminal degree
  • 2+ years professional Performing Arts industry experience
  • 5+ years of senior level academic administration in higher education experience
  • 3+ years of experience as an arts-focused faculty member
  • Preferred experience with Watermark Via (or similar solution) for assessment, curriculum planning, and program review
  • Successful record with advanced academic enterprise is critical. This includes: faculty recruitment and retention; academic personnel supervision; equity, diversity, and inclusion; program assessment and performance evaluation; and academic freedom
  • Outstanding communication, relationship-building, and collaboration skills
  • Demonstrated experience in and a commitment to anti-racism, allyship, equity, and inclusion
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with various constituencies within AMDA’s diverse communities, internally and externally
  • Ability to work efficiently, cooperatively, and collaboratively in a team environment
