Job Description

The Charles E. Via, Jr. Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Virginia Tech invites applications for a tenured faculty position in construction engineering and management at the rank of Associate or Full Professor effective August 2022. This position can be located in either Blacksburg, VA or in the Greater Washington D.C. metro area. We seek applicants with emerging or established leadership experience who pursue transdisciplinary research in smart construction and intelligent infrastructure. All areas of high impact research are of interest with priority for advanced technologies and data analytics in the built environment, sustainable and resilient infrastructure/communities, and collaboration in project organizations/delivery. This position is part of a coordinated team hiring effort that spans multiple departments across the College of Engineering for a new initiative focused on future manufacturing and construction engineering. Of particular interest are candidates with expertise that can integrate strongly with and can provide leadership to a well-established interdisciplinary team of faculty focused on research at the convergence of Industry 4.0 technologies. The successful candidate will be considered for the Vecellio Professorship in Construction Engineering and Management.
The department has 53 faculty, and a current enrollment of 320 graduate students and 700 undergraduate students. The department ranks 10th and 9th in undergraduate and graduate education, respectively, among all U.S. civil and environmental engineering departments (USN&WR). With classroom and lab facilities in Blacksburg, Virginia and in the Greater Washington D.C. metro area, the department is one of the largest civil and environmental engineering programs in the U.S.

The CEE Vecellio Construction Engineering and Management Program (VCEMP) has excellent facilities to support faculty and students in research, education, and outreach initiatives. The VCEMP Vecellio Endowment provides funding for undergraduate scholarships, graduate fellowships, an annual distinguished lecture series, and the named Vecellio professorship. The Via Endowment allows the CEE department to offer a significant amount of scholarships and fellowships to qualified students.
We are seeking candidates with a strong record of academic accomplishments and a proven ability to work collaboratively; experience with and commitment to interdisciplinary research and instruction, and a willingness to expand disciplinary boundaries to address complex technical and societal challenges. The successful candidate will contribute to instructional, research, and service activities of the VCEMP program. Candidates should demonstrate a strong commitment to scholarly work, sponsored research, mentoring students, undergraduate instruction, and specialized graduate education, including teaching practice-oriented courses.

Required Qualifications

A Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering or a closely aligned field and a strong record of academic accomplishments commensurate with other senior or mid-career applicants at time of appointment. Candidates must have expertise in an area of high impact research with a priority for advanced technologies and data analytics in the built environment, sustainable and resilient infrastructure/communities, and collaboration in project organizations/delivery.

Preferred Qualifications

Emerging or established leadership experience in transdisciplinary research in the areas of smart construction and intelligent infrastructure. Professional Engineer (PE) registration or the capacity to obtain registration is desirable, but not required.
