HVAC Systems Technician

Eligible for $500 sign-on bonus Position Purpose

Contributes to the mechanical services team, which includes the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) and plumbing shop operations, with an emphasis in HVAC by maintaining, repairing, and installing heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems and equipment, ensuring effective and efficient operations.

Key Accountabilities
  • Inspect, operate, repair, modify and overhaul heating, ventilation and air conditioning machinery using necessary hand tools and equipment, including steam distribution systems.
  • Maintain systems according to established maintenance schedules and appropriate maintenance functions
  • Perform duties and responsibilities with view toward energy conservation and department goals
  • Perform repairs and modifications on Steam/Heating/HVAC systems
  • Repair, maintain and troubleshoot all related equipment, including, but not limited to valves, controllers, motors, fans and heating and cooling transfer systems
  • Occasionally maintain or repair other mechanical equipment on campus
  • Maintain safe working conditions on the job and in the shop
  • Respond to and address urgent mechanical system repair issues on both HVAC and plumbing equipment.
  • Monitor the performance of controls and systems – provide analysis and troubleshooting and perform repairs and modifications diagnostically through BAS network
  • Provide support to plumbers as needed
  • Required to be on-call in the event of an HVAC or plumbing emergency
Technology Requirements
  • Minimum technology baselines needed to perform job responsibilities included, but not limited to, proper use of company issued iPhones, laptops and other equipment. Responsible for using Outlook calendar and checking and responding to PEA emails. Required to use and understand company issued software, including PEA’s work order system, Maintenance Connection.
  • Must adhere to PEA’s Technology guidelines

Incumbent works under the guidance of the Mechanical Services Manager, but is expected to work with a high level of independence and autonomy, and exercise a high degree of initiative, influence, and judgment in decisions impacting staff and department operations.

Expected to solve problems or address issues that require immediate attention.

Internal & External Contacts

Frequent contact with FM Managers, PEA administrative and academic offices, students, faculty and staff. External contacts could include contractors, outside construction workers, prospective students, parents, alumni, outside organizations, vendors, visitors and local community members/neighbors.

Position Requirements

Education
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Advanced technical education preferred
  • EPA Certification for handling all applicable refrigerants.
  • Confined space training is required. Training will be provided if necessary.
Experience
  • A minimum of three years of experience as a technician in HVAC
    systems installation, operations and maintenance, including direct experience with a computer based controls and energy management program required. Knowledge of and experience with building automation controls similar to those currently in use within the Academy is preferred.
  • A working knowledge of mechanical operations and hands on HVAC maintenance, including electrical, electronic and pneumatic control equipment, steam and hydronic heating systems and air conditioning systems preferred.
  • DDC control experience is required.
  • Proficiency with computer applications required.

Physical Requirements

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  1. Physical demands are in excess of those for sedentary work and officers must be able to remain on their feet for extended periods of time, go up and down flights of steps, as well as stoop, kneel, crouch, and lift.
  2. Ability to lift and transport a minimum of 50lbs without assistance.
  3. Ability to sit in a normal seated position for extended periods of time.
  4. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.
  5. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example using a keyboard.
  6. Communication skills using the spoken and written word.
  7. Ability to see with normal parameters.
  8. Ability to use a visual display terminal with continuous wrist movement on a keyboard.
  9. Ability to hear within normal range.
  10. Ability to follow verbal and written directions, maintain a professional demeanor and restraint at all times, including stressful situations.
  11. Ability to withstand exposure to inclement weather (rain, snow, sleet, freezing temperatures, etc.).
Additional Requirements
  1. Successfully complete a criminal background check (reviewed every 5 years).
  2. Clean Driving record (reviewed annually).
  3. Will be required to wear personal protective equipment as appropriate for the work assignment.
