Vacancy Number: S-00795 Position Title: Advisor/Student Success Coach Classification Title: Student Advisor Department: Central Advising Employment Type: Full-Time Duties and Responsibilities:
This position will report to the Director of Central Advising and will be responsible for facilitating student success in all majors related to professional fields (med-school, dental school, etc.). This position will work closely with the Coordinator of Pre-Professional Programs to provide general information regarding pre-professional and career advising resources to pre-health student and facilitate student connections with shadowing opportunities, undergraduate research, and mentoring programs. This position will also work closely with academic advisors to monitor student progress toward post-graduate goal.
Duties and Responsibilities
Advising / Coaching (70%). (Undergraduate, Graduate, Alumni).
o Meet regularly with all pre-professional students to ensure they are on track
o Develop and implement student success workshops for all pre-professional students on a variety of topics, such as academic success strategies, application procedures, interviewing strategies, etc.
o Work closely with faculty, WASC, and other student success personnel to ensure pre-professional students are successful across all degree programs
o Write letters of recommendations for pre-professional students and coordinate/participate in mock-interviews and other activities related to professional school admission
o Serve as advisor of campus pre-professional clubs/organizations, as needed
Outreach & Relationship Development (15%).
o Work with program coordinator to maintain student mentoring program, including coordinating and organizing volunteer/service, and job shadowing opportunities for students
o Participate in annual Path to Health Professions event
o Serve on student recruitment panels and support all initiatives related to student recruitment and retention
o Serve on university committees, as needed
Teaching (10%).
o Teach and/or participate in UNIV 1000 specialized (focused on Introduction to Health Professions) for incoming students (including honors) and BIOL 1950 (Preparing for Careers in Health Care)
o Teach test prep courses related to healthcare professions, as needed
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of the University’s student policies and procedures and those related to assigned department
Knowledge of first-year experience theory and practical application
Knowledge of applicable federal and state regulations
Exceptional written and oral communication skills
Interpersonal skills
Ability to develop, identify, and assess program goals and report findings
Ability to balance multiple projects at once Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree and 3-years of related experience working in an academic environment.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree and experience in academic or career advising. Experience working with careers in the STEM field. General knowledge of the health professions admission guidelines and processes.
