Kennesaw State University is now accepting applications for a twelve-month, tenured faculty position as Professor and Chair of the Department of History and Philosophy, beginning July 2022. The position includes supervising more than seventy-five full-time and part-time faculty in History, Philosophy, and History Education.

 

The chair is responsible for providing department leadership and oversees the department’s academic programs and budgets. The successful candidate should be an accomplished scholar with demonstrated administrative leadership skills and the ability to create an environment for collaboration, transparency, and shared governance. The chair will have the responsibility to promote and contribute to diversity, inclusion and equity. Working in collaboration with department faculty, department staff and the dean’s office the chair will support and enhance teaching effectiveness, scholarship and research, student success and community outreach.

 

Other responsibilities include:

  • Serves as a member of the Dean’s Leadership Team
  • Assures the academic integrity of undergraduate and graduate programs and courses in the unit
  • Collaborates with the advising, admissions and unit faculty to advise students and review transfer, credit by exam and other policies related to recruitment, student success and academic integrity; approve course substitutions as needed
  • Responsible for recruiting, hiring, onboarding, mentoring and retaining unit faculty and staff in keeping with university policies and procedures
  • Responsible for assigning faculty and staff workload, course scheduling, faculty and staff development
  • Collaborates with the College Director of Development and Marketing in identifying community partners, development opportunities and charitable gifts
  • Collaborates with the dean’s office and offices across campus to manage enrollments, schedule classes, recruit students, develop new programs, assess programs and the unit, collect and report data, manage resources, and effectively communicate and implement policies and procedures
  • Supervises program coordinators, graduate program directors, assistant/associate chairs and the internship coordinator
  • Completes annual performance review for tenured/tenure track faculty and staff in the unit. Oversees annual performance review for lecturers and senior lecturers. Manages systematic review of part-time faculty
  • Oversees part-time faculty payroll each semester and faculty payroll for summer including non-instructional pay
  • Makes recommendations on promotion/tenure/merit and oversees multiyear faculty reviews
  • Collaborates with offices across campus to assure that policies and procedures are communicated and implemented including but not limited to Faculty Affairs, Legal Affairs, Office of Equity and Inclusion, Student Success, Human Resources, Career Services and the Registrar’s office
  • Leads in the development and implementation of unit Bylaws and Promotion and Tenure Guidelines in keeping with the principles of shared governance and college and university policies and procedures
  • Manages grievance and appeal policies related to all unit employees and students enrolled in courses/programs
  • Responsible for budget management of the unit; proposes budget, plans spending, and approves spending in various online systems adhering to state and university policies  
  • Responsible for daily administrative tasks including management of the unit’s office, assigned space, and technology 
  • Facilitates training in course development and effective teaching to include training and approval of online courses taught by full and part time faculty in the unit
  • Oversees the development and updating of the curriculum for academic programs in the unit and general education as necessary
  • Models research and creative activity through regular conference presentation and publication in appropriate national and international professional academic venues
  • Facilitates and supports research and scholarly activity, professional service and outreach
  • Maintains appropriate files, records, and data pertaining to unit operations as required by the Dean and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs with due concern for confidentiality 
  • Participates in college/university/USG governance committees and task forces, as needed 
  • Other duties as assigned by the Dean 

 

Required Qualifications Include:

  • An earned doctorate degree (or its foreign equivalent) in History, Philosophy, or related field
  • A successful record of administrative experience in a department, college, or university setting
  • Achievements in teaching, scholarship, and service warranting appointment at the rank of full professor in the department
  • Ability to lead in a fast-paced, complex environment
  • Experience advocating successfully for faculty
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Experience with, and commitment to, shared governance
  • Accomplishments related to diversity, equity, and inclusion

 

Preferred Qualifications Include:

  • Experience in developing and/or leading curriculum development, including graduate curricula
  • Experience in building relationships external to the university
  • A record of cultivating external and internal sources of funding
  • Ability to provide support for online course development
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise personnel
  • Experience managing budgets
  • Demonstrated ability to work with faculty in building a strategic vision for the department
