Business Intelligence Analyst

School of Medicine Technology (SOMTech)'s Application Services team focuses on the twin missions of Business Intelligence and Education Informatics. We help transform complex academic, administrative, business, and financial data into actionable intelligence to improve strategic decision making for the University, School of Medicine, MCV Physicians, and Office of the Vice President for Health Sciences. Our team supports a broad portfolio of administrative, business intelligence, financial, and educational systems for the School of Medicine, MCVP, and VCU Health Science campus.

As part of SOMTech’s Application Services team, the Business Intelligence Analyst will:
  • Gather requirements on analytics initiatives
  • Design data models and ETL data pipelines
  • Distill complex data into user-friendly visualizations, dashboards, and reports
  • Produce technical and end-user documentation
Minimum hiring standards:

- Bachelor degree in computer science, information systems, or equivalent work experience in data warehousing, data modeling, and data visualization.
- Strong understanding of data structures, database design, relational and dimensional data modeling.
- Experience in extracting, analyzing, and interpreting data from a variety of sources.
- Experience developing reports and dashboards with business intelligence products (e.g., Tableau, PowerBI).
- Proficiency in SQL (ability to write SQL scripts and queries).
- Experience in R and/or Python.
- Experience working with stakeholders to gather business and technical requirements.
- Experience writing and maintaining systems and end user documentation.

Preferred hiring standards:
- Proficiency with the Microsoft data stack (SQL server, SSRS, SSIS, and Azure DevOps).
- Master’s degree in information systems, business analytics, statistics, or data science.
- Experience working with higher education and health system data.
