The VCU L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs, Public Administration Program invites applications for a tenure eligible faculty at the rank of assistant or associate professor to begin in August 2022. Applicants with a Ph.D. in public administration or public policy by the time of appointment are preferred (ABDs will be considered subject to demonstration of timely progress towards degree completion and the completion of all requirements for the PhD degree before the start of the appointment).

Successful candidates will join a dedicated group of colleagues with diverse interests and a demonstrated ability to teach effectively and conduct policy-relevant research with a strong commitment to service and community engagement. We are interested in faculty who will demonstrate through teaching, research, scholarship, creative expression, and/or public engagement, the richness of diversity in the learning experience through integrated intersectional approaches and perspectives.

Chief Purpose of this position:

This position is a tenure-eligible/track Assistant or Associate Professor in the Public Administration Program to begin in August 2022. The program is seeking productive scholars and researchers with an active research agenda in social equity and policy analysis or state and local government who show a commitment to high-quality instruction that can contribute to the strength and diversity of our faculty. The faculty will complement and expand our existing expertise in the field of Public Administration Policy.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Teaching – The successful candidate will join an accredited program - a recipient of the NASPAA Social Equity Award - and teach within the core requirements of the graduate curriculum and may contribute to the Ph.D. in Public Policy and Administration and introductory undergraduate courses in government and public affairs. The faculty will be expected to carry a teaching load equivalent to four 3-credit courses a year (2/2), involving both in-person and online delivery, and demonstrate leadership in developing techniques to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and intellectual interests.
  • Research – Faculty member must establish a nationally recognized research program with a record of publication in refereed journals within fields associated with Public Administration.
  • Service – Faculty member will serve on program, School, and/or University committees as necessary, as well as in a professional capacity in their field, e.g., reviewer, conference organizer, etc. Candidates applying at the Associate Professor level should be willing to serve in a leadership capacity.

    Required Qualifications:

    ● Ph.D. in public administration, public policy, or related discipline by the time of appointment (ABDs will be considered subject to demonstration of timely progress towards degree completion and the completion of all requirements for the PhD degree before the start of the appointment).

    ● Record of effective instruction.

    ● Record of publication and conference dissemination demonstrating expertise in the faculty area of research.

    ● Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
