The Center for Interprofessional Education & Collaborative Care invites applicants to apply for the available adjunct faculty positions in the Certificate in Care Coordination , an online graduate level program. This program will provide students with strategies and tools to become effective care coordinators for individuals with complex healthcare needs. Successful graduates of this program will be equipped to empower patients and their families who are at high-risk for excess use of healthcare services to effectively reduce health system burdens and decrease adverse health outcomes.
  • Ethical and Legal Consideration in Care Coordination (IPEC 513)
2 credit; 6 weeks

2022 course dates: January 18-February 26, 2022

Focuses on applying ethical decision-making frameworks to analyze ethical dilemmas that occur with patient care and between members of the interprofessional team. Examines care coordinator role conflict between patient advocacy versus health system advocacy. Provides a framework for identifying potential liabilities while working in the care coordinator role. Examines issues surrounding access to care and social justice. Explores legal responsibilities of the care coordinator.
  • Community-Based Care Coordination (IPEC 516)
3 credit; 9 weeks

2022 course dates: May 23-July 23, 2022

Emphasizes the value of maintaining a primary care provider and connecting the patient with appropriate community resources. Emphasis will be on the patient-centered medical home model of health care delivery, which provides an environment conducive to direct coordination of a patient’s primary care with a special focus on effective care transitions. Discusses concepts of advanced care planning, medication management and patient engagement from the outpatient perspective. Identifies how to differentiate high-risk patient populations and provide effective transitions of care within community settings. Introduces concepts of population health and the role of the family in care of the patient.

While both courses are online and asynchronous, the Community-Based Care Coordination (IPEC 516) requires one virtual synchronous session in July to moderate student capstone presentations.

Position Responsibilities:
  • Provide weekly didactic instruction

  • Assign reading and learning activities

  • Provide weekly feedback to students

  • Grade assignments and providing evaluation of student learning outcomes

Required Qualifications:
  • Graduate degree in a healthcare-related field

  • At least 5 years of experience working in healthcare

  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience teaching in an academic setting

  • Experience working on an interprofessional healthcare team

  • Experience working with an LMS such as Canvas and virtual meeting platforms such as Zoom
