Job Summary

Auburn University Libraries seeks creative, dynamic, and results-oriented applicants for the position of Processing Archivist for the Special Collections and Archives department. The successful candidate will be hired at Specialist I/II, Library Technical commensurate with relevant qualifications and experience. This individual will report to the University Archivist, but others in the unit may exercise some supervisory responsibility for particular projects.

The Special Collections and Archives Department currently contains over 1,200 record groups. Areas of focus include Civil War history; Alabama and Southern history; agriculture and rural life; aviation and aeronautics; the history of science and technology; architecture, design, and urban planning; and Alabama politics. The Department’s rare book collections focuses on Southern literature, aviation and aeronautics, fashion, natural history, private presses, religious literature, and English Bibles.

The Department supports and participates actively in statewide initiatives such as AlabamaMosaic (Alabama’s digital library) and the Alabama Digital Preservation Network (ADPNet). Faculty and staff from the Department have served as officers in the Society of Alabama Archivists ( SALA ).

Essential Functions

The primary responsibilities of this position include:

• Planning, designing, and creating exhibits featuring manuscripts, artifacts, and rare books from Special Collections and Archives.
• Arranging and describing manuscripts, archival records, and historical photographs.
• Participating in and occasionally coordinating specific departmental outreach efforts.
• Assisting with events sponsored or co-sponsored by Special Collections & Archives.
• Digitizing manuscripts, archival records, historical photographs, and rare books.
• Daily duty on the reference desk.

4 years. The salary range for Level I is approximately $27,000 - $32,000.

Area of Experience

Experience managing and processing complex data or materials and familiarity with basic computer applications and designs.

Requirements for Additional Job Levels

Level II requires a high school diploma or equivalent plus six (6) years of experience managing and processing complex data or materials and familiarity with basic computer applications and designs. The salary range for Level II is approximately $28,000 – $35,000.

Desired Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, especially those in the GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, Museums) fields; a certificate in archival studies or archives management from an accredited school of library and information science or an equivalent program; research skills in history or related fields; and experience handling archives, rare books, and unique historical items.
