Chief Objective of Position

To support the successful development of student athletes both in and out of the classroom.

Work Tasks

  1. Provides leadership and instruction in the personal and athletic development of student athletes at Christopher Newport University. 
  2. Directs and provides the planning, organizing and coaching of the Christopher Newport University sailing team. 
  3. Collects and analyzes tactical and statistical data of opponent teams; Designs game plans and strategies; analyzes performance of Sailing team and adjust strategies as needed. Establishes games schedules. 
  4. Counsels team members in academic, disciplinary and personal matters; consults with University administration and faculty for resolution of problems as required. 
  5. Responsible for the hiring and firing decisions as appropriate. 
  6. Oversees all financial aspects of the Sailing program including budget development and management. 
  7. Utilizes independent judgment and renders decisions on a daily basis regarding Sailing with little or no supervision on matters of importance. 
  8. Develops and implements operational guidelines and procedures per area of expertise. 
  9. Manage daily interactions with, and coordinate facility use by the sailing team at Youth Sailing Virginia, the current sailing location. 
  10. Screens and evaluates athletic qualifications of prospective Sailing recruits; coordinates with University Undergraduate Admissions Office to establish academic eligibility and arranges meetings between prospects and the University. Coordinates campus tours for visiting prospective players. Assists with new student orientation activities. 
  11. Compiles and analyses performance metrics for Christopher Newport University Sailing team. 
  12. Plans and administers the off season physical training program; provide special training for individual Sailing members as required. 
  13. Studies, evaluates and implements innovations in Sailing strategy and equipment. Authorizes purchases of Sailing related equipment. 
  14. Promotes the philosophy and objectives of the intercollegiate athletics program to include adhering to all departmental policies and procedures, as well as the rules and regulations of the university and the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association. Responsible for safety rules and regulations regarding use of equipment to reduce liability and to ensure compliance with all university, state and ICSA regulations. 
  15. Represents the Christopher Newport University Athletic Department in professional, civic, charity, and alumni events. Participates in professional associations. 
  16. Performs public relations and marketing activities to promote the athletic program; performs community relation activities. 
  17. Works a variety of schedules and hours consistent with the needs of the position. 
  18. This position is designated as a “responsible employee” who has the authority to redress sexual violence, who has the duty to report incidents of sexual violence or other student misconduct, or who a student could reasonably believe has this authority or duty. 
  19. Develop and maintain very positive and professional customer service and/or relations within the office/department and with all constituencies to include students, faculty, staff, guests, and employees. Demonstrate a positive and professional attitude and treat everyone with dignity and respect. Fully support the “Student’s First” value at CNU and routinely goes the extra mile in providing service. 
  20. Review and communicate safety issues to assure a safe and healthy workplace and a reduction in work related absence. 
  21. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities (KSA's) required

Skill in training or instructing competitive sailors; excellent interpersonal communication skills. Demonstrated organizational and time management skills. Demonstrated skills using a personal computer. Ability to analyze situations and develop solutions; travel and work non-traditional hours; manage people and projects. Ability to foster positive internal and external public relations.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities (KSA's) preferred

Current US Sailing Level Certification.
Knowledge of and demonstrated experience with Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) and regulations.

Knowledge of and demonstrated experience in the maintenance, care and repair for competitive sailing fleet and associated support boats. 

Required Education

A Master’s Degree in a related field, or a Bachelor’s Degree in a related field and training and experience at a level that equates to an advanced degree.

Experience Required

Significant and successful demonstrated coaching competitive sailors. Demonstrated skills with personal computers. Skill in training or instructing student athletes. Excellent interpersonal communication skills. Demonstrated experience in team management to include assistant coaches and others. 

Experience Preferred

Proven experience in recruiting successful student athletes. Experience in fostering positive internal and external public relations. Experience in developing and maintaining positive relationships with alumni, families and donors. Experience in recognizing, supporting and referring student athletes for needed academic and personal support.
