POSITION PURPOSE

The Networking Technician assists the Networking Manager in the operation and maintenance of the campus wireless infrastructure, network infrastructure, card swipe system, and the VoIP (Voice over IP) telephone and voice mail systems. As a member of Whitman College Technology Services (WCTS), this position collaborates with other members of WCTS to provide an information technology environment that is consistent with the goals of Whitman College and meets the needs of faculty, staff, and students.

PRINCIPAL POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES
  • Sets up, installs, and replaces Wireless Access Points on campus. This includes new building installations and redeploying and expanding existing building installations where necessary.
  • Assists and serves as backup to the Network Manager in the daily administration of the card swipes. This includes adding, renewing, and disabling cards and access privileges.
  • Assists and serves as backup to the Network Manager in programming and maintaining the campus telephones and voice mail system. This includes coordinating and/or performing the installation, maintenance and repairs of telephone and network related equipment and cabling
  • Assists and serves as backup to the Network Manager in the setup and maintenance of related switches, fiber & copper connections, and other system & network hardware components.
  • Performs service calls for problems relating to wireless equipment, network equipment, wiring and cabling, telephone/voice mail, and the card swipe system.
  • Monitors the inventory of spare parts and equipment to facilitate the quick repair of supported systems.
  • Performs other essential duties and implementation of projects as needed when bandwidth is available.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Individuals must be able to explain and/or demonstrate that they possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities and to possess the necessary physical requirements with or without the aid of mechanical devices, to safely perform the essential functions of the job.
  1. An ability to operate personal computers, and demonstrate proficiency in a networked environment.
  2. An ability to learn new technologies and assimilate new information quickly.
  3. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in:
    1. Trouble-shooting techniques and ability to read and interpret related schematics and service manuals.
    2. The use of a variety of power and hand tools, cleaners and test equipment related to the maintenance and repair of computer and network equipment.
  4. Strong customer service orientation.
  5. Strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with a variety of campus constituencies.
  6. Ability to positively and actively contribute to and advance the college's core values of diversity, equity and inclusion.
  7. An ability to lift heavy items up to 50 lbs. regularly.
  8. Willingness to work on occasional evenings and weekends.
  9. Preferred skills include experience with one or more of the following: Cisco Wireless (minimum requirement includes other wireless), network, and VoIP equipment with an emphasis on wireless devices.
  10. The ability to maintain records and inventories in a technical office.

  • Any combination of education and experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the position's responsibilities and duties.
  • Satisfactory clearance of background check required.
