Description of Job
The Prior Learning Assessment and Adult Learning Lead Specialist
manages and advances the university’s Prior Learning Assessment
(PLA) program, policy, and processes while supervising related
daily activities. The Specialist is charged with reviewing,
researching, expanding, and implementing prior learning program and
alternative credentialing options for students while enriching the
institution’s appreciation for learning that takes place outside of
the college classroom. Working closely with faculty, staff, and
students, the Specialist promotes the exploration of innovative
credit options and supports efforts to accelerate and streamline
degree completion. This position will work with community and
government stakeholders and faculty to create opportunities for PLA
for potential students. This position will work with faculty and
leadership to identify and change campus procedures and policies
that will facilitate a positive adult learning experience at CSU
Pueblo.
Primary Duties
Manages prior learning assessment policy, programs, and activities.
Facilitates the daily implementation of credit for prior learning
program options to help close the graduation equity gap.
Facilitates the development of additional credit for prior learning
programs and policies with community, state, and federal
stakeholders. Facilitates the continuous review and update of
credit for prior learning programs and policies.
Coordinates activities related to prior learning assessment for
degree or certificate seeking students to assist with campus goals
of promoting equity, retaining students, and helping students
graduate with their credentials. Work with advisors and department
chairs to process approved PLA credits for professional and
military work experience. Responsibilities include responding to
student inquiries, serving as a liaison between students,
faculty/academic departments, advisors, testing, and the
registrar’s office, and providing critical support for related
initiatives.
Provide advising to students to assist in evaluating courses and
experiences that could count towards degree completion, and work
with faculty to get approval to assist in students’ degree
completion. Encourage and develop opportunities for additional
experiential learning courses on and off campus and create
opportunities for credit or professional credentialing.
Develop and oversee a certificate and badging system through a
Student Management System that develops a process for acknowledging
learning for adult learning completion that may not be a
degree.
Represent CSU Pueblo at Colorado Department of Higher Education in
regard to PLA-related activities at the state level. Work with the
Provost and campus leaders to assess and measure success of
students who utilize PLA towards degree completion. Provide data to
support the Vision 2028 initiatives related to adult learning and
PLA implementation on campus.
Other duties as assigned.
Position is funded through FY24. Continued funding during
these years and beyond is contingent upon availability and renewal
of Vision 2028 funding or institutionalization of the
position.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year institution
Experience with basic office software including Microsoft Word,
Excel, and Outlook
Minimum of 3 years of working in higher education and knowledge of
Prior Learning Assessment (PLA)
Additional Desired (Preferred) Qualifications
Master's degree from an accredited four-year institution
Demonstrated knowledge of adult learning including non-traditional
students, online programs, and graduate programs
Demonstrated knowledge of academic programs and career
pathways
Demonstrated project management skills
Ability to think critically and solve problems
Ability to quickly understand written communication and identify
meaning and intent
Ability to communicate with people effectively and be part of a
team-oriented culture
