Applications are invited for a postdoctoral associate (job code 9546) in the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering department (MIE) in the Swenson College of Science and Engineering (SCSE) at University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD). The initial appointment will be for one year with further appointments contingent upon performance and availability of funding. This is a 12-month research position beginning January 3, 2022 or later.  The research will be under the direction of Dr. Alison Hoxie in the area of renewable energy, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and thermal energy. 

Job Duties
Research (100%): Participate in new research in the area of renewable energy, heat transfer, modeling and fluid mechanics. Co-author and present research papers in peer-reviewed journals and conferences. Co-author grant proposals to internal and external agencies.  Participate in collaborative meetings with internal and external faculty members. Supervise undergraduate and Master’s students.

Required Qualifications:
An earned doctorate degree from an accredited university by January 3, 2022, in Mechanical or Building Engineering or any relevant field with experience or interest in thermal energy systems, ground source heat pump systems, building energy systems and numerical modeling

Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge and experience with computational fluid dynamics modeling software such as COMSOL and ANSYS is an asset.

About the Department:  UMD MIE has undergraduate programs in Mechanical Engineering (ME) and Industrial Engineering (IE) which are both ABET-accredited and the department also offers two graduate degree programs: the Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering and the Master of Environmental Health and Safety. 

Our students are talented and engaged, both inside and outside of the classroom, and have an impressive track record in regional and national design competitions such as the United States Air Force Research Laboratories design challenge, the SAE Clean Snowmobile challenge, and high-powered rocketry competitions (e.g., the 2018 Spaceport America Cup).
