Job Summary

The Department of Chemistry encourages applications for a Laboratory Coordinator I ! This position is responsible for the preparation of materials and set up for student experiments, maintenance of apparatus and instruments, compliance with safety protocols and accurate chemical waste disposal, assisting graduate teaching assistants and faculty, and various administrative duties.

We have two openings available. One will work all year round, 12 months of the year. The other will work 11 months of the year, with a break month in June. Please indicate on your application which opportunity you'd prefer.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Lab Preparation & Chemical Safety
  • Preparation and clean up of solutions and reagents in required quantities for assigned courses.
  • Set up labs with apparatus/equipment/glassware needed for each experiment, and develop “green chemistry” experiments to reduce wastes as well as conserve energy and water and improve sustainability.
  • Practice lab safety at all times and stay updated on EH&S compliance. Ensure lab safety is enforced in all labs and with student lab assistants. Monitor and assess potential breakage.
  • Extensive support for CU Wizard shows and summer outreach programs.

TA Administrative Support for CU Undergraduate Teaching
  • Support TA Training activities, lab practicum, and weekly TA meetings.
  • Communicate with instructors and TAs to facilitate make­up lab experiments .
  • Patiently ensure students and TAs are supported when recitations and labs are in session.

Record Keeping and Instructional Technology
  • Manage all activities and forms related to recitations and labs both electronically and as hard copies.
  • Maintain files on general chemistry server for access by instructors and staff and support faculty and Tas with Canvas course pages.
  • Assist with student clickers as necessary.

What We Can Offer

The monthly salary for this position is $3,920. If working 12 months, this equates to $47,040. If working 11 months, this equates to $43,120.

What We Require

  • Must be a Colorado resident at the point of application due to the classified state position.
  • 2+ years of experience in an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position.
  • Appropriate education will substitute for the required experience on a year­ for­ year basis.


What You Will Need

  • Analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as on a team.
  • Excellence in establishing work priorities, providing follow-through, and meeting established deadlines.
  • Ability to maintain effective lines of communication including the ability to resolve conflict and negotiate.


What We Would Like You To Have

  • 2+ years of experience directly related to the work assignment.
  • A Bachelors degree in chemistry or a related science, including at least two years in a chemistry teaching/research lab.
  • Safety training and hazardous waste management skills are highly recommended.
  • A Master's degree or higher in chemistry would be a phenomenal asset as we continue to develop research­ based lab experiences, especially for chemistry and biochemistry majors.
