Leadership Development Generalist


Position Summary

Applications are invited for two Leadership Development Generalist faculty positions at the nationally recognized J.W. Fanning Institute for Leadership Development, a unit of the office of the Vice President for Public Service and Outreach at the University of Georgia. These will be 12-month renewable contract positions at the University of Georgia in the public service promotion track guidelines established by the office of the Vice President for Public Service and Outreach and the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia.

The successful candidates will serve as a member of the Fanning faculty and carry out the Fanning Institute’s mission of strengthening communities, organizations, and individuals through leadership development, training, and education. Fanning faculty develop, deliver, and evaluate leadership development programming and trainings for communities, organizations, and individuals. The Fanning faculty is interdisciplinary, and individual faculty members:
  • Work in teams to integrate knowledge from many disciplines as well as apply experience-based understanding of relationships and community dynamics.
  • Possess the capacity to work in diverse settings and help clients address a broad range of societal issues and needs through leadership development, training, and education.
  • Understand and embrace the land grant mission of public service and outreach at the University of Georgia, including serving the needs of underrepresented and/or economically disadvantaged individuals and communities.
  • Are skilled communicators, capable of leading high quality leadership training programs and facilitating meetings and group discussions.
  • Commit to working to address societal and community problems in an environment that encourages participatory processes – both internally and externally – and be capable of resolving conflicts and building consensus on issues of public import.
  • Work independently and in teams to generate a work program that helps support the Institute’s revenue needs.
  • Participate as appropriate in public relations, applied research, and professional development activities, and assist other faculty in leadership development programming.
  • Supervise graduate and undergraduate students and programmatic staff as necessary.
  • Are based in Athens, with frequent daily, overnight, and weekend travel depending on work program.

Minimum Qualifications

Masters degree in leadership development, adult education, nonprofit management, organizational behavior, public administration, or related field.

Additional Requirements

The successful candidates will be appointed at the rank of Public Service Assistant, Public Service Associate, or Senior Public Service Associate. For information about requirements for each rank, please see the Public Service and Outreach Guidelines for Appointments and Promotion .

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification

Minimum of 5 years of experience in:
  • Leadership development program design, delivery, and evaluation;
  • Working as a trainer or facilitator with basic knowledge of team building, group dynamics, personality assessments, and communication skills;
  • Planning for communities and non-profit organizations such as chambers of commerce;
  • Designing and conducting applied research for projects;
  • Developing robust client relationships;
  • Organizational capacity building in areas such as: programmatic evaluation/assessment;
  • Understanding group process and how to design, implement and evaluate what the clients’ needs are; and
  • Working with a variety of underrepresented populations in Georgia.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
  • Competency in facilitation, training, instructional design, strategic planning, and business development.
  • Experience in developing client relationships that enhance the Institute’s revenue needs.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work with the public, interdisciplinary faculty, and undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Ability to work in teams, often as the leader of the team, and willing to work as needed throughout the entirety of a project or program.
  • Ability to drive state vehicles.
