The Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies at San Diego State University invites applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor position.

We seek a historian who can advance our strong focus on borderlands, race, gender, sexuality, and social justice.  Specifically, we seek an intersectional and interdisciplinary scholar who specializes in 20th century Chicano/a/x history and who is theoretically and methodologically sophisticated and innovative. The topical area of specialization is open and may include racial formation(s), comparative racializations, cultural history, political and labor movements, visual arts, medical regimes and state policy, neurodiversity, care work and ethics, ethnic identity and community formation(s), penal institutions, and the Mexican diaspora, among others. In addition, we seek a scholar who has demonstrated experience with community-based research and engagement and who can help lead, promote, and expand the Chicana/o/x Archive, a community driven project with a wide variety of local Chicano Movement, civil rights, and feminist activism materials, housed in SDSU’s Love Library.  

The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. by July 31, 2022.  They will also have a strong record of research and publications focused on 20th century Chicana/o/x history and are expected to teach lower and upper division survey courses that include CCS 141A/B and CCS 350A/B as well as courses they develop within their area of expertise.  Additionally, the successful candidate will help mentor undergraduate students and be committed to working collaboratively with colleagues in service to the department. 

In their letter of application, candidates should address the points below:

    Intersectional/interdisciplinary 20th century Chicano/a/x history focus; Strong record and promise of scholarly publications appropriate to level of appointment; Theoretical and/or methodological innovation;  Demonstrated experience and commitment to sustained and collaborative work with and in service to Chicano/a/x communities in and outside of the university. Demonstrated commitment to research that engages Chicano/a/x communities;  Commitment to student-centered teaching of a diverse student population in a Hispanic-Serving Institution; Demonstrated commitment to working collaboratively with colleagues, and especially to develop social justice-oriented scholarship and pedagogical practices.

We are seeking applicants with demonstrated experience in and/or commitment to teaching and working effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and members of underrepresented groups. Candidates must satisfy two or more of the eight Building on Inclusive Excellence (BIE) criteria. Candidates that meet BIE criteria: (a) are committed to engaging in service with underrepresented populations within the discipline, (b) have demonstrated knowledge of barriers for underrepresented students and faculty within the discipline, (c) have experience or have demonstrated commitment to teaching and mentoring underrepresented students, (d) have experience or have demonstrated commitment to integrating understanding of underrepresented populations and communities into research, (e) have experience in or have demonstrated commitment to extending knowledge of opportunities and challenges in achieving artistic/scholarly success to members of an underrepresented group, (f) have experience in or have demonstrated commitment to research that engages underrepresented communities, (g) have expertise or demonstrated commitment to developing expertise in cross-cultural communication and collaboration, and/or (h) have research interests that contribute to diversity and equal opportunity in higher education.
