Simmons University is looking for an Assistant Director to join the Multicultural Center (MCC) team. Reporting to the Assistant Dean of Student Experience/Director of the Multicultural Center, the Assistant Director will assist in developmening, implementing departmental programs, initiatives and services designed to create a more visible, accessible, and inclusive multicultural space on campus. The Assistant Director is a self-starter who recognizes gaps and proactively seeks opportunities to work cross-departmentally.

This position has a special emphasis on fostering greater awareness, knowledge and skills around LGBTQA+ identities, culture and inclusion through providing support for the Simmons LGBTQA+ community. Additionally, the Assistant Director will support the Multicultural Center by managing the day to day operations, overseeing the ALANA Mentoring Program, supervising the MCC Student Staff and supporting the Cultural Affinity and Identity Based organizations.

As a member of the department's leadership team, the Assistant Director will represent the department by attending University committees as well as strive to support the University's core values by creating innovative ideas to promote the office, prepare students for life's work, and cross boundaries to create opportunities.

Programming & Trainings (25%)
  • Manage administrative coordination and execution of MCC annual/traditional/collaborative programs and events, including but not limited to orientation events, cultural affinity and identity based occurrences/celebrations, Multicultural End of the Year Celebration;
  • Create social and educational programming specific to LGBQTA+ populations, including Pride Week, Trans Day of Remembrance, Pronoun Day, etc;
  • Plan and organize community forums that explore topics of interest and/or concerns, including identity, culture, community, wellness, campus climate, and feedback;
  • Assist the MCC Director in the development and facilitation of student centered dialogues, trainings and workshops that introduces and expands on the common set of competencies for diversity, equity, and inclusion work; trainings include orientations, leadership development workshops, etc.; coordinate LGBTQ+ workshops, trainings, and other effective ally training.


Outreach/Advising/Consultation (30%)
  • Advise the Cultural Affinity and Identity Based student organizations, including organizing bi-weekly/monthly meetings; assist in their logistical event planning and purchasing;
  • Manage the ALANA Student & ALANA Mentor Program (ASAM) including marketing, info sessions, recruitment; check-ins and end of the year social; Collaborate with Simmons Alumnae/i to grow and sustain the ASAM Program; Support alumnae/i events and initiatives focused on diversity, equity, inclusion, that directly relate to enhancing the student experience;
  • Nurture relationships with internal and external partners to create opportunities for collaboration centered around diversity, equity, and inclusion, belonging and wellness efforts;
  • Serve on recruiting and interviewing committees as well as various university committees on behalf of MCC.


Marketing and Communications (15%)
  • Create and maintain event-related communication: website, Presence Hub, social media, marketing and content management; Align content with University communications, i.e The Anchor, The Simmons Brief, etc.;
  • Assist with internal and external communication.


Administrative/Professional Development (30%)
  • Monitor ASAM email, MCC email and Inquiry Request Intake form; respond accordingly;
  • Provide supervision and direct oversight for the Multicultural Center Graduate Intern and Student Coordinators, hire, train, evaluate and provide feedback regarding professional development and job performance;
  • Coordinate schedule rotation for the Cultural Affinity & Identity Based Organizations Offices (two rotating offices in the Center for Leadership & Engagement suite);
  • Participate in professional training opportunities on and off campus.


Assessment & Evaluation
  • Assist in gathering data and seeking input from BIPOC students to enhance the impact of Center resources and services;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Qualifications:
  • Master's degree preferred; Bachelor's degree required.
  • 2-5 years of professional experience working with diverse or marginalized populations or equivalent combination of education and experience; specific experience in providing direct support to LGBTQ+ communities;
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team;
  • Commitment to working with underrepresented populations of students, including an understanding in the way systems of bias operate and their impact on student experiences as well as the dynamics of privilege and oppression;
  • Experience advocating for and supporting the academic, personal and professional needs of underrepresented populations;
  • Willing and able to host regular after-hours programming and work occasional weekends;
  • Ability to manage confidential and sensitive information with discretion and professionalism;
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills;
  • Prior supervisory experience preferred.
