Malcolm X College is currently seeking a Children's Programming Instructor to join the Continuing Education team!

Community and Continuing Education non-credit courses are available for students and community members seeking occupational skills or personal enrichment. Malcolm X College is eager to launch accessible and effective children's programming based on Southern Poverty Law Center’sLearning for Justice to support the children of our West Side community, faculty, staff, and students.

About Learning for Justice

Since its founding in 1991, Learning for Justice—formerly Teaching Tolerance—has been recognized as a transformative force in education. Learning for Justice seeks to uphold the mission of the Southern Poverty Law Center: to be a catalyst for racial justice in the South and beyond, working in partnership with communities to dismantle white supremacy, strengthen intersectional movements and advance the human rights of all people.

Learning for Justice provides free resources to educators—teachers, administrators, counselors and other practitioners—who work with children from kindergarten through high school. Educators use materials to supplement the curriculum, to inform their practices, and to create inclusive school communities where children and youth are respected, valued and welcome participants.

Founded by the SPLC under the name Teaching Tolerance in 1991, Learning for Justice was originally created to prevent the growth of hate by reducing prejudice. In the last 30 years, their work has evolved to center justice and the action that students and educators can take to realize change.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

• Utilizing the resources found throughLearning for Justice to develop and implement social justice-oriented evening/weekend children's programming, which includes developing an appropriate and engaging one-day, one-week, 8- and 16- week curriculum for ages 7-9 and 10-13.
• Build an inclusive environment and curriculum that provides for a variety of appropriate activities to promote children’s development in the areas of language and literacy, cognition, social-emotional well-being, and physical health.
• Employ effective learning strategies and deliver instruction of high quality that help students explore identity and diversity, recognize injustice and learn to take action.
• Provide a safe, healthy environment for children.
• Ability to teach using different methods and teaching styles, ensuring that participants are fully engaged.
• Inspire, motivate, and foster confidence in all students.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Commitment to social justice and advancement of human rights of all people.
• At least one year of experience working with children in a professional or community (e.g., summer camps, after school programming) setting, preferred
• High School Diploma required, some college preferred.
• West Side resident, preferred.
• Demonstrate good communication skills and ability to communicate effectively with children and parents.
• Ability to create or assist in creating developmentally appropriate lessons.
• Moderate proficiency of personal computers and applicable software.
• Must be able to develop, prepare and present information.
• Must be able to work in a multicultural environment and embrace our vision and mission.
