Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The School of Health and Applied Human Sciences ( SHAHS ) has a long history at UNCW . Founded in 1965 with five faculty members, it has undergone several name changes and now has 52 full-time faculty members and more than 1,400 students majoring in our undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The SHAHS is one of three schools, along with the School of Nursing and the School of Social Work in the College of Health and Human Services ( CHHS ). The overarching goal of the CHHS is to help individuals, families, and communities live healthier, more prosperous, and more productive lives.
The SHAHS has six undergraduate-degree programs:
- Exercise Science
- Healthful Living and Fitness Education
- Public Health
- Tourism, Recreation, and Sport
- Recreation Therapy
- Respiratory Therapy
The SHAHS also has several graduate-degree programs:
- Athletic Training
- Gerontology
- Healthcare Administration
- Supports a Masters of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) and a Masters of Education concentration in Physical Education and Health (M.Ed.) through the Watson College of Education
Each of these degree programs focuses on helping others find enjoyment and satisfaction in their lives regardless of age or ability. SHAHS’ faculty are passionate and caring teachers/scholars who are committed to engaging students in real-world issues at the individual, family, and community levels.

Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The Administrative Associate serves as the primary receptionist for the School of Health and Applied Human Sciences, and provides administrative support for full-time and part-time faculty. The person in this position must complete all assigned activities and responsibilities with a customer service focus. The Administrative Associate is required to have knowledge of the programs and activities of the School of Health and Applied Human Sciences and the operational structure of the school and college. The Administrative Associate must have reasonable knowledge of other internal and external organizational segments with which activities must be interfaced.
Primary responsibilities of the Administrative Associate include:
- Answering all incoming phone calls; screen and direct all calls to the appropriate person
- Communicating information to students, staff, faculty, and off-campus constituents in a highly visible office
- Providing general administrative support for faculty searches
- Researching information for reports and data needs
- Maintaining all office supplies and inventory
- Coordinating school events (i.e., Celebration of Achievement, faculty retreat, Outstanding Student event)
- Maintaining the School’s website and social-media presence
- Assisting faculty with student overrides and tasks utilizing the ERP and LMS
- Providing purchasing support to faculty
- Assisting with coordination and organization of accreditation activities and program reviews
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work
Preferred education, professional skills and experience
- A Bachelor’s or Associates degree in Business Administration
- Experience with providing administrative support or office management
- Ability to learn and quickly utilize new software programs
- Demonstrated ability to work independently
- A high-level of attention to detail
- Excellent organization and customer service skills
- Experience supervising students or other entry-level
- A general understanding of the degree programs in the School of Health and Applied Human Sciences
