College of the Atlantic (COA) seeks a full-time, tenure-track
equivalent faculty member to teach psychology (Ph.D., Ed.D., Psy.D,
or equivalent degree in Psychology or a related field required).
All students at COA design their own transdisciplinary degree
within our single major of human ecology. A few students will go on
to graduate studies in psychology; most will use psychology as a
means of understanding the human mind, brain, and behavior.
Students also use psychology courses to prepare for post-graduation
work in the arts, business, counseling, education, healthcare, law
and policy, sciences, and social work, among other occupations. As
such, the college is particularly interested in candidates who can
help students explore the relationships between individuals and the
communities and institutions that shape their lives. As part of the
college’s commitment to the practice of human ecology, candidates
should be interested in collaborating with colleagues across
disciplines and teaching psychology to students working on
interdisciplinary projects.
The candidate is expected to develop a suite of courses that
appeals to a wide range of students. Teaching responsibilities (5
courses per year) will include courses in at least three of the
following areas:
• Health psychology
• Environmental Psychology
• Cultural psychology
• Neuropsychology
In addition to a seminar course in the candidates’ specialty, other
desirable courses include, but are not limited to, cognitive
psychology, contemporary psychology, decolonizing psychology,
ecological psychology, industrial/organizational psychology,
addictions, media and technology studies, personality and social
development, political psychology, positive psychology, public
health psychology, and social psychology.
The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to efforts
to teach social science research methods, including statistics.
Preference will be given to candidates with successful college
teaching experience, who have experience in mixed-methods research
(including community-based participatory research), and those who
have a track record of or demonstrate strong potential for inter-
or transdisciplinary collaboration.
The campus community has expressed particular interest in topics
such as: health promotion within vulnerable populations, community
health and wellness, racial justice, decolonization, economic
justice, climate/environmental justice, alternative and caring
economies, immigrant and refugee health, restorative justice, and
human sexuality. We are particularly interested in candidates who
can address these issues through their teaching, scholarship, and
community engagement.
College of the Atlantic is committed to increasing diversity,
fostering inclusion, and achieving equity in all aspects of its
work. We especially encourage candidates who demonstrate how their
teaching, service, and research would contribute to making the
college more inclusive, equitable, and diverse. We are particularly
interested in an individual’s record working with students,
colleagues, and communities who identify with the experiences of
those historically excluded, under-represented, or marginalized in
higher education. The search committee welcomes applications from
those historically under-represented in higher education.
Please send letter of interest, CV, a concise statement of teaching
philosophy including your approach to teaching diverse learners,
and descriptions of three to five courses you would be prepared to
teach, along with the names of three references, in one pdf
document to Psychologysearch@coa.edu. Review of applications will
begin December 1, 2021 and continue until the position is filled.
Appointment by the fall term of 2022 is highly desirable.
