Position:

The department of Family and Consumer Sciences at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) is seeking a tenure-track faculty member in Food Science at the rank of Assistant Professor.

The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses in Food Science. Teaching responsibilities include a broad spectrum of courses in the field of food science, including introductory level through senior-level courses. Establish a continuous pattern of scholarly activities and publications, including research, participation in professional activities, and as appropriate, securing extramural funding. Collaborate in interdisciplinary projects with faculty within the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences and across the university. Advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students. Involve and supervise students in research and master’s theses. Participate in curriculum and program development for the department/discipline.

In addition to teaching, the position requires weekly office hours, attending faculty meetings, and service to the department, college, and university. The successful candidate will be held to the standards and requirements of the college and department in which he/she is housed for recommending tenure and promotion.

Required Qualifications:

  • Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in food science or closely related field from an accredited university by the effective date of employment.
  • Related professional teaching experience.
  • Demonstrate the ability and commitment to working, educating, and mentoring a diverse student population that includes non-traditional students, veterans, student parents, and the second-largest deaf population of students in the nation, to name a few.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • College or University-level teaching experience, both in-person and online.
  • Professional/work experience related to the field of food science position.
  • Successful research implementation and oversight of original research, successful record of publications, and success in obtaining extramural funding.
  • Demonstrate effective engagement with a racially diverse and non-traditional student body
  • Experience using culturally responsive pedagogy that lead to equitable outcomes for all students
  • Experience creating a student-centered learning environment
  • Experience adopting inclusive approaches to research and mentoring
  • Active participation and membership in professional organizations such as the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT), Research Chefs Association (RCA), or Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND)
