Responsibilities

1. Information Literacy Instruction (30%)
  • Teaches information literacy sessions for the School of Science. Information Literacy is a campus-wide student learning outcome.
  • Develops research guides and tutorials. Participates in the design and content of the SMC Library Website through participation in the Web Team.
  • As time permits, provides instruction in composition classes.
  • Keeps up with professional literature on best practices in teaching information literacy skills and collaborates with colleagues.
  • Actively participates in Instruction Team meetings.


  • 2. Collection Development (30%)
  • Serves as Subject Selector and actively works with faculty departmental liaisons to develop priorities for selection and select digital and print materials, maintaining an appropriate collection of books, journals, databases, media and related resources. Expends annual funds allocated for new materials and continuing funds devoted to ongoing resources in these fields.
  • Stays abreast of the content of courses and faculty research activities and understands the research-based assignments students receive in all classes taught in these fields.
  • Monitors the publishing patterns and content for these fields and ensures that the library's collection of databases, periodicals, books and other media supports the teaching, research and learning needs of the students and faculty.
  • Understands and follows the Library's collection development policy and procedures, develops and maintains knowledge of the overall Library collection and resources, and develops expertise in the specialized resources particular to discipline areas for which the incumbent is responsible.
  • Participates in the selection of donated materials and weeding of the collection.
  • Provides Library Resource and Information Literacy reviews for proposed new courses, programs, and program reviews within assigned discipline areas.
  • Actively participates in Collection Development Team Meetings.


  • 3. Reference (20%)
  • Provides research advice and assistance in person and online to all SMC students, faculty, and staff and non-SMC users. (5+ hours per week at the reference desk, 2-3 hours per week answering personal queries from science students and faculty.)
  • Assesses individuals' information needs through discussion and questioning and instructs them in the use and interpretation of library resources and other research tools.
  • Maintains -in-depth knowledge of information sources relevant to assigned subject areas and works with faculty to stay abreast of the curriculum and assist students in successfully completing research assignments.
  • Actively participates in Reference Team meetings.
  • Stays current on issues, best practices and technologies related to the provision of reference service.


  • 4. Scholarly Communication and Scientific Publishing Research (10%)
  • Supports the library's scholarly communication initiatives and the scholarly communication efforts of faculty and students in assigned subject areas
  • Researches policies, practices, and workflows for, and authors guides and educational materials on scholarly communication topics such as: avoiding predatory publishers; making undergraduate research available in an institutional repository; trends in open science and research reproducibility; and other scholarly communication and science publishing efforts that have potential to benefit SMC faculty and students.


  • 5. Campus and Professional Contributions (10%)
  • Serves on library and college committees as assigned.
  • Maintains membership and involvement with appropriate subject and professional associations.
  • Contributes service to professional and/or college community endeavors.


  • Experience and Qualifications
    Education: REQUIRED: MLS or equivalent from ALA accredited program. PREFERRED: A degree or coursework in one or more of the subjects served by this position.

    Experience: (years required and applicable field of experience):
    1. Demonstrated knowledge of library services for an academic environment. Preferred: demonstrated, successful experience working in an academic library providing services for students and faculty.
    2. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of emerging/established practices and standards in information literacy instruction and collection development/management.
    3. Preferred: Demonstrated, successful experience delivering quality instruction and reference/research service in a student-centered environment.
    4. Preferred: Demonstrated, successful experience producing subject-specialized learning objects, tutorials, and webpages, using a variety of tools.
    5. Preferred: Experience establishing and assessing learning outcomes.

    Skills/Abilities: (e.g. computer skills, written & verbal skills, trades, laws, procedures, technical)
    1. Knowledge of databases and other resources for research in the sciences, or willingness to engage in self-directed learning about these resources.
    2. Ability to support student success by engaging students in the scientific literature, from first-years to graduate students.
    3. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    4. Demonstrated, successful experience working both independently and in a team environment.
    5. Demonstrated success working cooperatively, respectfully, and effectively with faculty, and in a culturally diverse community.
    6. Demonstrate awareness and experience understanding the needs of a diverse student population - in age, cultural background, ethnicity, primary language, and academic preparation - through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies, and collection development.
    7. Demonstrated, effective planning and organizational skills.

    1. Requires capacity to work flexible hours, including weekends and evenings. Some instruction occurs on evenings and weekends, and librarians share evening and weekend service on the Reference Desk.
