Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

The Department of Industrial Design in the College of Design at Iowa State University invites applications for an Assistant or Associate Professor in Industrial Design beginning in Fall 2022. This position is a full-time (9 month) appointment, additional summer support is negotiable.

Ideal candidates will have the ambition to redefine what industrial design education, research and practice ought to be for a truly inclusive and responsible future for not just the human but for the ecology and environment that we are all part of. Information has become one of the most influential commodities, how does it impact industrial design but more importantly, how can it be used for a humane, equitable, sustainable and planet centered human driven society. We welcome diverse perspectives, approaches and experiences to enrich the inclusive learning experience we all seek to create.

 

As such the department is aiming to represent the diversity of people we are serving as a profession, this means we especially welcome applications from candidates belonging to historically underrepresented people in higher education. Faculty in this position will have the opportunity to integrate the design studios they teach with their research goals and through experimental projects in the studio, advance not only their research but also push the boundaries of what industrial design education can and should be.

Position Responsibilities:

-The ability to teach at the undergraduate and graduate level courses in Industrial Design.

 

Courses may include, but are not limited to:

-Industrial design studios (sophomore to graduate level)

-Industrial design history and theory

-Materials and manufacturing processes

-Human factors
-Design research
-Visualization analog and digital (Sketching, CAD, Prototyping)

-Sustainability

-UX/UI

 

Required Minimum Qualifications:

-Master’s degree in product/industrial design and/or other related fields.

-Professional accomplishment in [Industrial] Design, in research/creative inquiry and/or industry/practice.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

-PhD in product/industrial design or design-related fields and/or allied fields.

-Demonstrated experience in academic administration and/or supervisory experience, including fiscal and personnel management.

-A successful record of funded research and/or professional experience.

-Active engagement in transdisciplinary collaborations.

-Experiences reflecting that design serves and is practiced by diverse people

-Experience teaching both small- and large-enrollment courses;

-Experience teaching hybrid and/or online courses.

 

Department/Program & College Description:

The Department of Industrial Design was formed in 2010 as part of the College’s expansion plan and endeavor to create the most comprehensive college of design in the region. The department was formed with a vision to bridge the intersections between design academics, practitioners and end-users, by exploring new models, tools and modes of working that strengthen design practice, improve social and growth development and build a world-class learning environment. The department includes 5 tenured/tenure track faculty, 9 term faculty, and approximately 200 undergraduate and 12 graduate students. The Industrial Design program offers a Bachelors in Industrial Design (BID) and a Master in Industrial Design (MID). Both the undergraduate and graduate programs are NASAD accredited. The undergraduate program includes cross-disciplinary integration, minors, industry sponsored projects, a study abroad and internship program. The program has established strategic collaborations with other highly-ranked colleges and departments, such as electrical and mechanical engineering, apparel design and business. The Industrial Design department offers an integrated and concurrent program that leads to a BID and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree.

 

The Industrial Design department is seeking candidates with a passion for design education and professional commitment to excellence that supports all three dimensions of the land-grant mission: education, research/creative inquiry, and outreach.
