JOB SUMMARY:

The Student Disability and Accessibility Support Specialist is responsible for the day-to-day administration of Cooper Union’s Student Disability Support Services including the review and evaluation of student accommodation requests, communicating with students and faculty related to students’ accommodation needs, reporting on compliance, and other aspects of supporting students with disabilities at Cooper Union.

This is a part-time position working 20 hours per-week. This position will consist of both in-person and remote work requirements.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Student Disability and Accessibility Support

  • Demonstrate working knowledge of ADA, 504, and related laws and resources pertaining to higher education and accessibility, as well as adaptive/assistive technology
  • Maintain a confidential communication process as directed to notify students and relevant faculty/staff of students' approved accommodations and resources in writing each semester
  • Conduct regular outreach to students; provide advising and resources to proactively support students' successful achievement of academic and related goals
  • Collaborate with Information Technology, academic school’s advising teams, and other academic and administrative colleagues to identify and implement accommodations to assist students and faculty
  • Maintain appropriate online content about accommodations and accessibility resources
  • Negotiate and mediate discussions between students and faculty / staff as it relates to supporting students with disabilities
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff on best practices in best practices related to accessibility and disability support
  • Research, review, and recommend new practices and resources related to accessibility and disability support

General Responsibilities – Division of Student Affairs

  • Assist with Student Affairs programmatic opportunities for the entire Cooper Union student body.
  • Maintain a high level of visibility on campus and build strong relationships with students.
  • Serve as a liaison between students and Cooper Union administration, campus-wide resources, services, and departments - facilitating positive relationship building.
  • Develop and foster relationships with Administrative/Academic departments to support campus programs and initiatives.
  • Contribute to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures and backgrounds.
  • Develop and implement a strategic plan for all areas of responsibility and provide regular updates to supervisor.
  • Keeps abreast of professional development opportunities by attending conferences, seminars, and workshops.
  • Other duties as assigned within the scope of this position.

SKILLS/REQUIREMENTS:

  • Demonstrated experience in higher education administration, student affairs with a focus on student disability and accessibility support.
  • Experience and training in working with diverse populations and a demonstrated, articulable commitment to inclusion practices is required.
  • Exemplary written and verbal communication skills are required. Must be able to write concisely and professionally.
  • Proven administrative ability, excellent organizational skills, written and oral communication skills, and strong detail orientation required. 
  • Ability to work independently, take personal initiative, and work within a team-oriented environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in collaboration with others in the development and delivery of programs across the college.
  • Understanding of legal issues and relevant state and federal laws related to higher education and student affairs administration (including FERPA, ADA, Clery, and Title IX).
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced, urban, student-centered environment.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE :

Conferred Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university required. Conferred Master’s degree in higher education, student development, clinical counseling, social work, or a related field from an accredited college or university and 1-3 years experience in student conduct at an institutional of higher education preferred.
