Job Summary

The purpose of this position is to produce branded graphic designs that can be used across multiple channels including print, web and social media. At the direction of their supervisor, this position designs and develops original, high-quality graphic design content for a variety of audiences in support of goals related to advancing the reputation of CU Boulder as well as university goals for recruitment, student success and advancement.

Strategic Relations and Communications facilitate an integrated approach to campus-wide marketing and communications to inspire greater CU Boulder engagement, affinity and support.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Active Graphic Design and General Projects as assigned:
  • Create and produce branded graphic design projects for Strategic Relations and Communications for various areas and channels including recruitment marketing, executive communication, student success communications and social media content within printed and digital formats.
  • Manage time effectively, clearly communicating the time required to the concept, create, design and edit various marketing projects.
  • With guidance from their supervisor, manage project timelines, conceptualize, create, edit, conduct post-production work and present final work to a variety of people including media relations staff, marketing staff, creative staff, student interns and campus partners.
  • Understand the range and nature of all distribution channels used by Strategic Relations and Communications and use that information to guide the creative process and final deliverables.
  • Understand the target audiences for campaigns and communications to guide the creative process and final deliverables.
  • Study, adapt and incorporate contemporary creative techniques to maintain a fresh, current and authentic style that supports the CU Boulder brand and visual identity.
  • Collaborate with copywriters, campaign managers and other campus partners to understand the goals of each campaign and project.
  • Understand and incorporate design nuances applicable to various distribution channels.
  • Stay relevant by researching competitive graphic design and visual communication practices, within and outside of the higher education industry.
  • Understand and follow established processes for editing, reviewing and finalizing marketing projects within project management software.
  • Properly package and submit design files for print production and digital advertising.
  • Attend press checks as needed.
  • Attend photo shoots as needed.

Campus Outreach:
  • Serve as a visible member of the university graphic design community.
  • Maintain consistent touchpoints with communication colleagues throughout campus to assist them with understanding graphic design trends and support them by demonstrating how the trends can enhance their marketing and communication efforts.
  • Attend regular campus partner design meetings, in addition to developing training resources and follow-up support for key communications staff both within Strategic Relations and Communications and across the campus.
  • Work with campus brand manager to ensure proper usage of branding standards and implementation of the campus brand guidelines.

What We Can Offer

  • The hiring salary for this position is $48,000 - $52,000.

What We Require

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in graphic design or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 1+ years of professional work experience as a designer, multimedia designer, or marketing communications professional. Experience with creative concept development, design planning, art /photo direction, and multimedia design.


What You Will Need

  • Expertise in Adobe Creative Suite, especially in Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign.
  • Experience in packaging files for print publication, including large format.


What We Would Like You To Have

  • Demonstrated success in the design and execution of integrated multimedia projects in a professional environment.
  • 3-5 years of professional work experience as a designer, multimedia designer, or marketing communications professional. Experience with creative concept development, design planning, art /photo direction, and multimedia design.
