Job Description

This position at NAU’s Institute for Human Development (IHD) is responsible for program leadership, oversight and management of multiple projects including the IHD Core Function area of Interdisciplinary Education and Training (IET) which includes the Undergraduate Disabilities Studies Minor, the Graduate Assistive Technology Certificate, and the Graduate Disability Resource Services Certificate, and also directs the Transition Programs for Students with Intellectual Disabilities (TPSID)/Supporting Inclusive Practices in Colleges, (SIP-C) grant projects designed to promote successful access to college for young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Essential Position Responsibilities:

  • Applies advanced ability in work design, project management, financial planning, and goal development; applies awareness of trends and changes in Intellectual and Developmental Disability (I/DD) services specifically and cross category disability services in general.
  • Provides supervision (official and unofficial) to staff and consultants; responsible for task assignment and coordination; conducts performance reviews; monitors employee interactions and promotes a productive, inclusive work environment; identifies potential performance and employee relations issues; applies institutional HR and talent policies and practices, including practices associated with recruiting, hiring, and onboarding/offboarding of staff.
  • Oversight for work design, project management, budget planning/management and goal development; applies awareness of trends and changes in developmental disability policies and services across projects.
  • Plans/coordinates internal and external meetings and trainings.
  • Guides and supports the continued provision of in-person and/or remote teletherapy services as appropriately responsive service delivery formats based on current health conditions.
  • Participates in IHD Core Function meetings, Community Advisory Council meetings, partner meetings, etc. as needed.
  • Ensures that the project contracts are in place and/or funding is available to support uninterrupted and/or new project activities.
  • Ensures qualified personnel are available and meet project work scope requirements of the assigned projects.
  • Provides regularly scheduled opportunities for staff to exchange experiences and ideas relative to implementing evidence-based practices.
  • Per the work scope across projects, ensures that deliverables (e.g., monthly billing, quarterly reports, final reports, , etc.) are prepared and submitted within established timelines.
  • Ensures that staff across assigned projects track and enter all required program information into the IHD/NIRS data collection system.
  • Facilitates staff involvement in activities that expand the IHD's capacity to address a broad spectrum of efforts to promote the status of people with disabilities.
  • Follows up on requests made by IHD Executive Director or Associate Director as appropriate.
  • Responsibilities specific to leadership and oversight of the Interdisciplinary Education and Training Core Function area:
  • Provides oversight for the Undergraduate Disability Minor and Graduate Certificate programs in Assistive Technology and Disability Resource Studies
  • Coordinates and presents plans and course proposals to appropriate NAU committees for approval.
  • Applies problem solving strategies regarding the interface with IHD-specific programs and NAU relevant to policies pertaining to students, instructor pay, etc. and developing assessment plans for our certificates.
  • Convenes the IHD Curriculum and Assessment Committee (occurs monthly during the academic year); prepares agendas and follows up on items related to NAU policies.
  • Ensures that all goals/objectives and activities for IHD core grant in preservice areas are being addressed.
  • Prepares written reports for core grant (progress reports).
  • Leads and/or assists in writing grant proposals.
  • Attends annual AUCD meetings and the National Training Directors’ Council meetings as funding permits.
  • Meets with coordinators of certificates programs and instructors to discuss policies, address concerns, and plans for the future.


Responsibilities specific to leadership and oversight of the SIP-C Projects:

  • Develops, revises, and implements postsecondary transition support services for individuals with disabilities.
  • Designs and reconciles program budgets for awarded grants ($100K and $2.5M).
  • Supervises, mentors, and coaches staff to achieve program goals.
  • Works closely with program funders, stakeholders, executive teams, and an interagency coalition to craft program scope and deliverables.
  • Identifies essential resources and determine implementation timeline.
  • Designs comprehensive data collection methods and instruments.
  • Analyzes program gaps and enacts mitigation tactics.
  • Prepares briefing materials, materials, and performance reports.
  • Networks with local, state, and federal entities to cross-pollinate awareness of program objectives and services to eligible populations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field.
  • 2-4 years of supervisory experience.
  • 3-5 years relevant general disability experience.
  • A combination of relevant experience, education, and training.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or doctorate in related field.
  • Experience working with tribal populations.
  • 3 years college level teaching experience.
