Position Description

The Department of Chemistry at San José State University invites applications for a tenure track position in biochemistry. Excellence in research and teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate level is expected. The candidate will be teaching courses, including laboratory courses, in biochemistry (130A/B/C, 131A/B, 132, 135 and graduate courses). Flexibility to teach in other sub-disciplines of chemistry is desirable. The candidate must be able to adapt their teaching methods to a variety of learning environments, including online instruction. The successful candidate will develop a robust research program engaging undergraduate and graduate (M.S.) students

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in biochemistry, chemical biology or equivalent doctoral work. Alternatively, a Ph.D. in chemical education with a focus in biochemistry research and significant experience working in a biochemistry lab.
  • Research in biochemistry or in an area that interfaces with biochemistry including educational research.
  • Applicants should demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a socially and economically diverse student population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching, and other comparable experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience teaching in biochemistry.
  • Postdoctoral experience in biochemistry or in biochemistry educational research is preferred.
  • Experience mentoring undergraduate and/or graduate research students.
  • Key Responsibilities
  • The candidate will teach courses, including laboratory courses, in biochemistry (Chem 130A/B/C, 131A/B, 132, 135 and graduate courses).
  • The candidate must develop a research program that incorporates undergraduate and MS students
  • The candidate must submit grants and peer reviewed research publications.
  • The candidate will participate in shared governance, usually in department, college, and university committees and other service assignments.
  • The candidate must demonstrate awareness and experience understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, abilities, cultural background, ethnicity, religion, economic background, primary language, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic preparation – through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.
