The Opportunity

The College of Journalism and Communications at the University of Florida, ranked No. 5 nationally among public universities, invites applications for a teacher-scholar whose excellence in journalism research can amplify our reputation. This is a nine-month, tenure-track position, open to candidates who already have or will have earned a doctorate in journalism or communication before starting work in August 2022.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in communication or related field and a record of original research The University is particularly interested in recruiting diverse candidates to meet the needs of its diverse student population as well as the surrounding community. Applicants must demonstrate a record of scholarship in journalism and related areas and have a proven ability to teach graduate and undergraduate courses in these areas. Research topics could include subjects such as the coverage of underrepresented groups or the impact of evolving journalism-adjacent technologies on peoples and societies. Preference will be given to candidates who have a strong publication record, present evidence of excellence in teaching, supervising student work toward the completion of theses and dissertations, and possess a willingness to collaborate on research and/or extramural funding with peers within the College and across campus.

In their letter, applicants should detail:

• how the candidate’s research (a) has potential to establish a national or international reputation and (b) furthers the college’s mission to advance the greater good through scholarship that explores the implications of journalism in an increasingly diverse and complex society;
• the candidate’s past and current experiences as well as future plans to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching and research;
• the undergraduate and/or graduate courses that would most closely fit the candidate’s skills and evidence of how the candidate has designed or taught compelling classes to engage students with a diverse and complex society;
• evidence of ability to work with and mentor advanced students, including those pursuing a doctorate.
