Scope of Job:
To provide skills in the maintenance and repair of automotive equipment. Responsible for performing mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of automobiles, trucks, tractors, bulldozers, and related equipment.

Description of Duties:
• Examines vehicle and assesses the nature and extent of damage or malfunction to conduct required repairs.

• Plans work procedures using charts, technical manuals, diagrams, and specifications.

• Rebuilds and repairs engines, transmissions, and clutch assemblies in accordance with specific instruction

• Repairs or replaces parts such as pistons, rods, gears, valves, and bearings

using mechanical hand tools.

• Overhauls or replaces carburetors, alternators, distributors, starters, pumps, and components of electrical and electronic systems.

• Uses diagnostic equipment as an aid in locating vehicle defects.

• Performs emission control repair, replacement and testing on all required vehicles.

• Road tests vehicles to locate operational defects prior to returning to active use.

• Operates shop machines to rebuild or fabricate machine parts.

• Assembles materials and tools.

• Ensures completed work conforms to specifications, requirements, and is in compliance with applicable safety codes and regulations.

• Orders parts and repair equipment.

• Participates in the maintenance and operation of an automotive shop.

• Performs work in accordance with established safety procedures.

• Maintains a clean and safe work environment.

• Understands and follows oral and written instructions or specifications.

• Performs engine tune-ups, engine overhauls, maintains and repairs brakes, transmissions, exhaust systems, electrical systems, auto cooling and heating systems.

• Performs body work including painting, sanding, grinding, and sealing, among other duties.

• Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervision Received:
General direction from the assigned supervisor.

Supervision Given:
General supervision of assigned staff.

Required Education:
High school graduation or equivalent or applicable certifications.

Preferred Education:
Vocational School training in auto mechanics’ and body repair.

Licenses/Certifications:
As condition of employment this position requires the applicant to be authorized to operate a University-Owned Vehicle for Official University Business. Per University of Texas System Policy 157, applicants will be subject to a motor vehicle record check for their most recent thirty-six (36) month history. Out of State Drivers are required to submit a 36-month history MVR from their prior State of residence(s).

Required Experience:
Three (3) years of experience as an automotive mechanic.

Preferred Experience:
Four (4) or more years of the above experience.

Equipment:
Considerable knowledge of tools and equipment of the automotive and gasoline engine maintenance and repair trade.

Working Conditions:
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Exposure to Mechanical and Electrical Hazards. Exposure to outside environments, hot, dry, wet, cold; some work in restricted spaces, bodily strain and discomfort. Duties may involve the lifting and moving of heavy objects, stooping, crawling, climbing, reaching, and other activities requiring physical exertion. Danger of falls, chemicals, electrical shock and burns, and hazards and conditions inherent to the trade or assignment. This position will be subject to a pre-employment physical.

Must be accurate in recognizing and making adjustments to close tolerances.
