Basic Function:
Under the direction of the Chief Of Staff, the Social Media Specialist will plan, produce, and measure engagement with content that aligns with California Lutheran University's brand strategies across social media channels.

Representative Duties:
  • Creates, edits, publishes, or supervises production of engaging content for social media.
  • Manages content marketing and community engagement on the University’s Master Brand social media accounts.
  • Helps to develop and articulate social media strategies that support University branding priorities.
  • Identifies and documents best practices for each social media channel.
  • Gathers, reports, and analyzes social media metrics to develop optimization plan.
  • Maintains a content calendar for managed accounts and establishes a process for appropriate daily output.
  • Partners with key stakeholders to develop social media style guide for Master Brand accounts.
  • Coordinates with a community of campus social media managers and provides guidance, training, and assistance to them.
  • Maintains and enforces campus social media policy through administration of business accounts across platforms.
  • Collaborates with the Associate Director and other content producers to develop practices for content re-use and distribution; participates in on-campus content communities.
  • Contributes to the ongoing development and refinement of the University’s integrated brand strategy.


Knowledge Of:
  • Visual storytelling techniques
  • Best practices for social media marketing and content production
  • Social media publishing and management tools across channels including, but not limited to, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Youtube, and Snapchat
  • Fundamentals of grammar, syntax, style, and punctuation; meticulous proofreading skills
  • Writing and the use of tone and voice for effective communication with a variety of constituencies
  • Social media analytics and reporting
  • Graphic design
  • Mobile video production, i.e. “backpack journalism”
  • Photography and photo editing
  • Audio recording and editing
  • Community management
  • Project management practices to direct content production
  • Microsoft or Google office software suites
  • Adobe Creative Suite
  • University mission, goals, and objectives


Ability To:
  • Tell compelling stories through text and visuals
  • Expertly use social media publishing, management, and content creation tools
  • Promote the University on social media in appropriate and engaging ways
  • Interact with the public in the voice of the University and provide excellent customer service
  • Write and present information in a clear and intentional manner
  • Collaborate with student workers to produce social media content that adheres to our brand and social media strategies
  • Evaluate and edit the work of other social media content creators
  • Work independently as well as cooperatively as part of a team
  • Build effective working partnerships within University Marketing and with other campus partners
  • Build positive relationships and educate campus partners about social media best practices
  • Work on multiple projects simultaneously and meet project deadlines for work assigned or outsourced while maintaining quality standards
  • Develop social media marketing plans for specific enrollment, fundraising, outreach, and brand awareness initiatives
  • Maintain shared content and records
  • Prepare reports related to assigned activities
  • Continually develop skills and stay up-to-date with social media best practices
  • Operate a computer and other office equipment


Minimum Qualifications:
Any combination equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism, English, multimedia or related field and three years of experience in social media marketing.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in higher education
Experience with graphic design and video production
Experience with brand strategy
Experience with content marketing

Working Environment:
Office environment; frequently out of office at various locations on campus. Occasional evening and weekend work will be required.
