The College of Education, Department of Instruction & Curriculum Leadership is seeking to add a full-time, nine-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Special Education beginning August 15, 2022. The
applicant’s teaching practice should demonstrate commitment to and experience with (1) special education methods and theoretical frameworks; (2) teacher education preparation; (3) diversity, social justice, and equity to promote effective learning; (4) culturally relevant and sustaining practice; and (5) comprehensive and sustained professional growth opportunities to enhance professional practices involving diverse populations. The candidate will have demonstrated commitments to the content area of special education,
research/scholarship in the field of special education, have experience in field-based teacher education, professional development, and K-12 teaching experience. Additionally, the candidate will have a strong
commitment to teaching and service at a large research-based institution that integrates high-leverage practices into their coursework and professional development. Ideally, the candidate will have strong
knowledge of the edTPA, university teaching experience, including face-to-face, hybrid, and online learning environments, and classroom teaching experience with K-12 children and families from diverse backgrounds. Applicants will be expected to demonstrate commitment to excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
• Earned Doctorate (obtained by August 1, 2022), in Special Education or closely related field
• Evidence of excellence in K-12 teaching for a minimum of 3 years in Special Education
• Evidence of an emerging/established research agenda
• Demonstrated commitment to cultural responsiveness, equity, inclusiveness, and addressing the needs of diverse populations
Desired
• Experience working on externally funded projects and seeking external funding
• Experience with teaching and/or professional development in urban schools
• Expertise in using classroom assessments and student achievement data to inform instruction
• Demonstrated use of technology integration in teaching and professional development
• Demonstrated teacher leadership and experience with field-based teacher preparation
• Participation in collaborative and school/community-based initiatives and partnerships
• Highly motivated, organized, and able to handle multiple responsibilities
• Demonstrated knowledge of 21st century education and education for globalization
• Experience and evidence of excellence in teaching at the college level
• Current teaching license
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Teach and supervise field-based and online elementary education or related undergraduate and graduate courses.
• Implement a significant on-going program of focused scholarly research and publications, including collaborative efforts with colleagues.
• Provide service and leadership to state, regional and national professional organizations, the university, college, and department.
• Provide professional service to surrounding school districts, education-related nonprofits, and programs
• Chair and serve on master's and doctoral committees.
• Engage in research, writing, and other scholarly activities related to elementary education
SALARY
Salary will be competitive and commensurate with qualifications. The position is a nine-month, tenure-track appointment with an anticipated start date of August 15, 2022. The University offers an excellent benefits
package including healthcare and retirement, and the state of Tennessee currently has no state income tax. Memphis and the surrounding areas maintain a low cost of living relative to most parts of the country.
