Web Designer

We are seeking a Web Designer (Website Specialist) who will be a part of a fully remote team that provides web design services in support of the Johns Hopkins University Office of Communications.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

    Plays a key role in the website design lifecycle that comprises gathering user requirements, illustrating design ideas, designing graphic elements, developing mockups and prototypes, and quality assurance testing for high-priority flagship websites for Johns Hopkins University. Creates strong creative visual design solutions and strategies for communications web projects based on modern web standards and technologies, design philosophy, and expertise. Recommends and defends decisions that best fit the needs of diverse projects based on a strong understanding of best practices, while considering user experience, site usage analytics, information architecture, and other technological requirements and limitations. Demonstrate advanced creative thinking when converting ideas and descriptions into design concepts and visual examples, which can be quickly modified and adapted in response to further feedback. Demonstrate in-progress design concepts in a variety of media, including wireframes, static mock-ups, and HTML prototypes. Co-develop in HTML and CSS for modern PHP frameworks predominantly based in WordPress and Drupal. Help shape the visual design direction for the university’s flagship website (JHU.edu) and the Hub. Deliver high-quality work on tight deadlines, with the ability to quickly iterate and incorporate feedback and new ideas from other designers, developers, and stakeholders. Collaborate with back-end developers to improve website usability, accessibility, and performance. Write code in a git-powered version-control environment, with a commitment to learning and contributing to a shared set of programming best practices to facilitate easy collaboration and code maintainability Demonstrates an ability to work and effectively communicate with a diverse technical and non-technical team. Identifies and resolves design problems independently.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • A Bachelor’s Degree and two years of experience in website design, visual communication required.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications:

    Must have demonstrable mastery of web design and its associated design tools, and HTML and CSS along with a solid understanding of web standards and best practices.
  • Familiarity with analytics reporting, WCAG 2.0 or greater website accessibility compliance, website usability, and cross-browser compatibility issues.
  • Any other web design experience is also a plus, including but not limited to JavaScript libraries and frameworks (such as jQuery), wireframing, user testing, information architecture, and experience with version control. Must be passionate about the web and demonstrate a willingness to stay up to date with an ever-changing list of best practices, new technologies, and new ideas.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

    Excellent organization and communication skills. Ability to perform high quality work, both independently and with a team. This position will be fully remote with the expectation of traveling to the office when needed for meetings, workshops, and other requirements.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
