About the Opportunity:
Reporting to the Vice President for Communications, the Senior Writer is a versatile, precise, and fast writer who produces a broad range of institutional writing and communications. The Senior Writer is a quick study who can turn around public statements, talking points, campus-wide emails, and related communications that span a broad range of issues. To be successful, the Senior Writer must be curious, quick thinking, and able to research thoroughly and write impeccably with minimal direction.

Topics that the senior writer will cover include the full range of issues at a major research university—from science to community relations, from financial aid to athletics. The Senior Writer should anticipate forthcoming issues and be ahead of the Vice President whenever possible. Attention to detail and nuance is essential. The ability to write fast and turn around assignments quickly without compromising quality is critical. It is also essential to be able to able to pivot at a moment's notice and to pivot as needed. The ability to learn the character and ethos of Northeastern will be important, as well as knowing how to find information from internal offices and sources. A general understanding of higher education issues, public policy, and relevant trends is desired.

The Senior Writer is a key member of the university's Office of Communications—part of the division of External Affairs—and is expected to work collaboratively with colleagues such as those in media relations, social media, and the university's in-house news team.

Prior experience in higher education is not needed, nor is it desired. A positive, problem-solving attitude is essential. Like all positions in the Office of Communications, after-hours and weekend work is routinely required. The Senior Writer is embedded in the Communications team on the Boston campus and the position is not eligible for remote work.

5-7 years of experience writing in environments that required versatility, speed, high standards, and careful attention to detail
