The School of Visual Art and Design and the Film and Media Studies Program at the University of South Carolina invite applications for a full-time, tenure-track position in the discipline of media studies with subfield expertise in media industry studies and race. This is a joint appointment between the School of Visual Art and Design’s Media Arts program and the Film and Media Studies Program in the College of Arts and Sciences. The appointment begins August 16, 2022 and can be made at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. Of interest are candidates who specialize in African American, African, or Latinx media industries research, though research need not be limited to only these areas. Expertise in film, television, games, or new media would be equally welcome, along with an ability to relate North American and global/transitional media contexts.

The position is a joint appointment between two academic units, thus will teach, develop, and potentially collaborate on new and existing courses within Media Arts and Film and Media Studies on a 2/2 load (two Media Arts and two Film and Media Studies courses per year). In addition to developing new courses in their research specialization, this new faculty member would be expected to teach one or more foundations courses in global media industries, media cultures, film and media analysis, film and media history, and/or film and media theory.

Specialization in media industry studies, popular culture studies, and/or archival/documentary studies is particularly desired to foster engagement with the Moving Image Research Collections and within other special collections held by the University that intersect with issues of race and culture.

The successful candidate must have their Ph.D. in film and media studies (or a closely related discipline) in hand by August 15, 2022.

Candidates should be prepared to upload application materials to https://uscjobs.sc.edu/postings/107131 which should include:

  • Cover letter
  • Research statement
  • Teaching statement
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Names and contact information of three references
  • One writing sample (up to 40 pages)

Review of applications will begin November 15 and continue until the position is filled.
