Department Summary
The College of Design Office of External Relations and Communications communicates to a broad range of internal and external audiences about the excellence and social impact of the academic programs and people in the College of Design. The team provides media relations, digital communications, graphic design, writing, editing, marketing, and brand services to College of Design departments and programs and collaborates with university partners to improve the effectiveness of communications, marketing, and outreach, utilizing an integrated digital, print, and social media approach.

Position Summary
The College of Design Office of Communications is seeking a creative and self-driven designer, writer, and marketing specialist with 3+ years of experience developing and delivering design solutions and content that grows the college's brand presence externally, and builds brand awareness internally. This position will partner with the Dean and University Communications in telling the College of Design story, and crafting engaging and exciting design experiences for internal and external users. The Communications Specialist will create proactive communications, carry out design updates, and manage multiple projects simultaneously with a high level of quality, service, and autonomy.

Position responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Creating new and engaging content (visual, written, and audio) both digitally and in print
  • Maintaining and developing the college website to grow the presence and recognition of the college, its educational programs, student experiences, faculty research, and community outreach
  • Designing and executing social media updates that are aligned with College/University best practices and strategic communications plans
  • In coordination with University Communications, applying University brand standards to reflect the mission and tone of the college
  • Leading the design and development of engaging and creative experiences, including commencement
  • Development and implementation of DSGN communication plan and associated processes

    The College of Design Communications Specialist must be organized, collaborative, and able to effectively delegate tasks to other communications staff and student employees. This position will be required to manage up to 5 projects/tasks at a given time within weekly and monthly deadlines. The ability to establish priorities, work independently, and proceed towards objectives without supervision is critical to this role.

    This position reports to and works closely with the Dean, requiring skillful decision-making regarding communications strategy and content.

    Minimum Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree from a design discipline, marketing, communications, or a closely related field
  • Three years professional experience with design, marketing, and content creation for digital and printed platforms

  • Demonstrated ability to create, edit, and manage high-quality content (visual, written, and audio)
  • Demonstrated ability to design printed and digital material
  • Demonstrated knowledge of website design and digital content management
  • Strong ability to assimilate and organize complicated information to write, edit, and convey strategic messages for a variety of media, audiences, and contexts
  • Demonstrated written, verbal, and visual communication skills that are dynamic, strong, and professional
  • Excellent grammar, spelling, attention to detail
  • Demonstrated knowledge of search engine optimization (SEO) and analytics
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, set appropriate work priorities, and require minimal supervision over regular work activities
  • Strong project management skills, including ability to manage multiple projects with tight, sometimes competing deadlines
  • Proficiency using various software tools, including Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, Web Design applications (Dreamweaver, HTML), and social media management tools (Hootsuite, TweetDeck, HubSpot)
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity and equity
  • Demonstrated ability to work with faculty, staff, and students from diverse backgrounds in an inclusive, welcoming environment; ability to effectively work and communicate with individuals from varied cultural backgrounds

    Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with digital communications in a higher education setting
  • At least two years of experience creating and managing social media campaigns for a variety of platforms
  • Proficiency in graphic design and photo editing using Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator)
