Job Description

The Conrad Blucher Institute (CBI) is an endowed self-supporting research Institute within Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (TAMU-CC) that has conducted original research and supported academic programs for the past thirty years. The Institute's mission is “Surveying a dynamic world through geospatial research, innovation, and education.” CBI has been successfully funding its research through federal, state, local and private sector sponsors totaling about $4.5 million per year over the past three years. TAMU-CC seeks a new Director and Endowed Chair to lead the Institute averaging approximately seventy researchers, associated faculty, staff and student employees while maintaining a unique organizational culture. The new Director's expertise will be grounded in the geospatial sciences or related fields. The new Director will have experience leading research teams and securing extramural funding and will establish and maintain strong ties with the profession, the research community and funding agencies at the state, national and international levels. The Institute includes experienced operations, administrative and information technology teams, as well as researchers and faculty. The Institute supports affiliated academic programs including a BS in Geographic Information Science (GISC), an MS in Geospatial Systems Engineering (GSSE) and PhDs in Geospatial Computer Science (GSCS) and Coastal and Marine System Science (CMSS) as well as integrates students from other TAMU-CC academic programs into CBI research opportunities.

The Institute conducts a wide range of applied research. While long-standing projects focus on coastal applications, using precise terrestrial and coastal measurements and developing and implementing operational models, the Institute is building on this foundation by developing new methods to process and analyze data and provide related actional information to stakeholders. Expertise in the fields of Surveying and Geomatics, Geospatial Information Systems, Coastal Processes and Geospatial Computing have enabled Institute researchers to use and further develop methods using UAS/Photogrammetry, LiDAR, and other remote sensing methods using mobile platforms such as drones and vehicles. The large data sets acquired combined with other data are a fertile ground to develop artificial intelligence methods and other geospatial computing algorithms, the institute has a twenty-year history of developing Artificial Intelligence (AI) methods for environmental predictions and has become a national hub for coastal AI. The institute is a Co-PI of one of the inaugural National Science Foundation (NSF) AI Institutes, Institute for Research on Trustworthy AI in Weather, Climate, and Coastal Oceanography (AI2ES.org). The NSF AI Institute is led by the University of Oklahoma, includes other academic institutions, national laboratories, and private sector partners such as IBM and Google.

The new Director will be able to draw on the strengths, resources, and expertise of five research laboratories and an expansive operational staff with activities all along the Gulf of Mexico. The research laboratories are the Coastal Dynamics Lab, The Measurement Analytics Lab, the Spatial {Query} Lab, the Geospatial Optimization and Analytics Lab, Operations Lab, and the Texas Spatial Reference Center established by the State of Texas in 2005.

The new Director will report to the Vice President for Research and Innovation. This relationship facilitates close collaboration in support of extramural projects and diversifying the Institute's funding portfolio including philanthropic, corporate and foundation sources. The new Director will work closely with Institute staff, associated faculty, and students as well as other faculty and leadership of academic colleges to continue leading innovative funded research and a tradition of being a resource to the profession and the communities the Institute serves.

Qualifications:

• Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in a geospatial science field including Geospatial Computing, Surveying, Geomatics, Geodesy, Computer Science, or closely related discipline.
  
• Ten (10) years of experience.
  
• Record of original, extramurally funded research with a publication record in archival journals.
  
• Ability to attract, support and retain a diverse and inclusive staff, and communicate effectively with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community.
  
• Demonstrated experience in fund raising and donors' relations.
  
• Demonstrated success in mentoring colleagues and students at graduate and undergraduate levels.
  
• Demonstrated experience/success in cultivating relationships including with industry locally and nationally, with state and federal agencies, and with relevant foundations and professional associations.
  
• Experience with commercial geospatial systems technologies and a background in research laboratories, corporations, or government/non-profit sectors in relevant fields.
