Basic Function:
Reporting to Director of the Office of Education Abroad, the Assistant Director of the Office of Education Abroad is responsible for the operational implementation of off-campus, intercultural curricular programming as part of the university's comprehensive internationalization initiative. The Assistant Director will oversee student advising, lead recruitment efforts, support the Director with office operations, and incorporate a social justice framework into all aspects of their work.

Representative Duties:
  • In consultation with the Office of Education Abroad (OEA) Director, implement and critically assess a comprehensive approach for education abroad programming that directly aligns education abroad programming with the university’s mission. E
  • Design and manage holistic, student-centered advising practices for the Office and serve as lead advisor to all students interested in education abroad programs. E
  • Support students throughout all aspects of their education abroad experience, including recruitment, advising, course selection, application review, preparation, guided reflection, transcript processing, and alumni support. E
  • Oversee the development and implementation of co-curricular programming and events, including education abroad fairs, pre-departure orientations, and re-entry programs. E
  • Design, implement, and lead communications and outreach for the Office of Education Abroad, including but not limited to the study abroad email account, website, information sessions, classroom presentations, and social media accounts. E
  • In consultation with the Center for Global Engagement staff, implement and assess strategic marketing of the Office of Education Abroad brand. E
  • Facilitate the Global Ambassadors program through the selection, training, and supervision of student returnees to assist with recruitment and co-curricular programming. E
  • Provide lead oversight of OEA data management systems, generating reports and analytics as needed. E
  • Maintain ethical and transparent fiscal responsibility of assigned financial tasks, including invoice processing, budget review, and scholarship disbursement. E
  • Collaborate with faculty and partner providers to design, map, and implement curricular and co-curricular, high- impact education abroad experiences, such as affiliate programs, international internships, research projects, domestic options, virtual programs, and service-learning/alternative break programs. E
  • Under the direction of the OEA Director, assist with the implementation of risk, health, and safety measures, including general and specific emergency plans, the Cal Lutheran Travel Registry, emergency procedure faculty and staff training, and direct management of complex international emergencies. E
  • Support the OEA Director with design and implementation of short-term faculty-led programs. E
  • Implement approaches to monitor and further enhance student access and student education abroad programs. E
  • Support the OEA Director with the assessment of student learning outcomes using qualitative and quantitative measures. E
  • Identify strategies to strengthen underrepresented students’ participation in education abroad offerings. E
  • Represent Cal Lutheran at relevant professional conferences or associations and serve on university and national committees, as appropriate. E
  • Collaborate on initiatives to advance internationalization, including through partnerships with other campus units and Center for Global Engagement units: the Office of International Students & Scholars and Office of International Admission. E
  • Supervise graduate interns, as feasible.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or requested.

  • Develop promotional materials for education abroad programs.
  • Work in various communication applications such as InDesign, Canva, Photoshop, MailChimp, Flickr, Hootsuite, etc.
  • Operate a computer, copier, fax, passport camera, and other equipment as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:
Any combination equivalent to: a Master’s degree in a field directly relevant to international education with preference to international education, international/global studies, international relations, higher education administration/global emphasis, foreign language/culture, intercultural communication, or international business, and two years of successful full-time work experience in international education programs or initiatives in a college or university setting.Experience living or studying abroad.

Preferred Qualifications:
Three (3) years of successful full-time work experience in international education programs or initiatives in a college or university setting.Reading and speaking knowledge of at least one foreign language in addition to English. Commitment to and experience in expanding education abroad opportunities to under- represented students and those in STEM fields.
