Directly Report to: Director of Simulation Operations

Indirect Report to: Standardized Patient Program Coordinator

Summary:

The Simulation Educator and Technologist is responsible for supporting all programming in the Cooper Medical School of Rowan University Clinical Skills and Simulation Center (Sim Center). The Simulation Educator and Technologist assists the Simulation Program with the use of technologies which support the integration of simulation into the CMSRU curriculum. Additionally, this position contributes to the content and logistical design of simulation based teaching and testing events, assists with case, test and curriculum development and provides individualized and group simulation training sessions.

Position Description:

  • Collaborates with Sim Center staff and faculty to plan teaching sessions utilizing SPs, task trainers and high fidelity mannequins
  • Assumes duties of SP Program Coordinator, when the SP Program Coordinator is not available
  • Participates in case development, working with faculty and Sim Center staff to ensure correctness and accuracy of case content and simulated participant training details
  • Identifies needed case changes, rating tool revisions, event improvements and process refinements
  • Assists with development of learning objectives for simulation-based educational programs.
  • Assists in updating case materials with new clinical information and training information
  • Trains simulation participants to portray roles and to complete assessments of learner. Trainings may be one-on-one or in groups.
  • Provides individualized, constructive feedback to simulation participants and other simulation training staff during the training process
  • Suggests simulation participant recruitment plans and simulation participant/case assignments to the SP Program Coordinator
  • Participates in or assists with OSCE rater faculty development and/or rater grading sessions
  • Prepare Simulation Center facilities for teaching and testing events. This includes preparing simulation participants, appropriate Simulation Center spaces, medical equipment/props and AV technology and computer systems
  • Set up, take down, clean and store equipment
  • Demonstrate and/or teach technical aspects of operating simulation center software to faculty members or others designated by Simulation Center faculty
  • Assist in maintaining archive of student participation in simulation events and ensure security of confidential student records pertaining to simulation events. Assist students and faculty in securely accessing the archive when they are permitted
  • Assist Simulation Center staff and faculty in running Beta tests of software event builds prepared for all simulation events
  • Operates simulation center software or cameras during teaching and testing events
  • Assists in development of training videos by providing technical support
  • Educates and supports all simulation participants in their use of the simulation center scoring software
  • Assists in training of simulation participants, includes portraying a medical student or other healthcare learner and facilitating training workshops
  • Assists in providing feedback and administering other QA measures
  • Assists in case development and large scale event planning and administration of large scale events
  • Suggests simulation case changes and process refinements
  • Assists in the facilitation of small group teaching events (ex. physical exam sessions)
  • Coordinates with Simulation Center staff to support utilization of the simulation center management software and AV capture programs by SPs, students and CMSRU faculty
  • Prepares paper materials for training and assessment events. Paper materials will be used as back up to simulation center management software
  • Completes simulation program related data entry
  • Creates backups of key simulation computer files
  • Maintains security of confidential paper and computer files
  • Assist in maintaining Simulation Center event calendar
  • Coordinates simulation program email correspondence related to events and participant recruitment
  • Provides event orientations to simulation and other event participants
  • Participate in and assist with research and scholarly activities
  • Participate in additional simulation events in lab space and off-site locations, when needed
  • Infrequent evening, weekend or off-site work may be required. Early morning work (sometimes starting as early as 6:00am) is occasionally required
  • Additional duties and/or special projects as assigned


Education: BA/BS required. Coursework in education and/or assessment strongly desired

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Familiarity with standardized patient and other medical simulation program
  • At least 1 year of professional full-time experience as an SP trainer or simulation trainer


(Due to the nature of this work, many simulation jobs are temporary, part-time. Part-time experiences may be added up to meet the above qualifications.)

  • Must demonstrate writing and editing skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint


Preferred:

  • Familiarity with standardized patient and other medical simulation program
  • At least 2 years work in medical education and/or simulation *

Physical Requirements:

Individual must be able to:

  • See in low-light areas because Simulation Center Control rooms require low lighting.
  • Use fine motor skills to operate touch screen monitors and to set up medical equipment
  • Bend under desks and stretchers to access wiring or equipment
  • Quickly move around Simulation Center during teaching or testing events
  • Lift 20lbs independently, 35lbs with assistance in order to lift supplies when setting up rooms for events.
  • Simulate a healthcare professional performing a physical exam on patients
