Assistant Professor of Musicology, Tenure Track

The Department of Music at Vassar College invites applications for a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor in Musicology beginning in fall 2022.

Vassar College is an affirmative action and equal opportunity employer with a strong commitment to increasing the diversity of the campus community and the curriculum, and promoting an environment of equality, inclusion, and respect for difference. Candidates who can contribute to this goal through their teaching, research, advising, and other activities are encouraged to identify their strengths and experiences in this area. Individuals from groups whose underrepresentation in the American professoriate has been severe and longstanding are particularly encouraged to apply.

This position is part of a multidisciplinary cluster hire with curricular focus on race, racism, and racial justice that aims to stimulate collaboration among departments and programs across the college. We seek an experienced teacher and scholar with a strong commitment to the liberal arts and to undergraduate teaching, with broad musicological expertise in music of the African diaspora writ large. Specializations in jazz, music of Black women, other areas of Black music in cultures of the Americas, or related fields would significantly complement our curriculum. We desire a colleague who will contribute to our core courses within the department, such as Fundamentals of Music or the music history survey, as needed. A scholar who could also contribute to our strong performance or composition programs would be welcome.

Qualifications: A completed PhD in musicology or similar field at the time of hire, evidence of ongoing and significant research activity, and experience in college-level teaching. Please apply online at https://apptrkr.com/2500024. Include cover letter, CV, teaching and research statements, a statement highlighting contributions to or future plans for promoting diversity and inclusion through teaching, research, and other involvements (https://offices.vassar.edu/dean-of-the-faculty/positions/candidate-diversity-statement/), and three letters of recommendation. Review of applications will begin on November 1, 2021; there is no guarantee that applications submitted after this date will be considered. Please direct any inquiries about the position to Christine Howlett, Chair of Music (chhowlett@vassar.edu).
