The Department of Physics, University College Cork (UCC) invites applications for a Professor/Professor (Scale 2) with specialisation in astrophysics, gravitational physics or cosmology.  

 

UCC is one of Ireland’s foremost research universities, with 18,000 students and 3,000 staff. The Department of Physics has a long established reputation for excellence in teaching and research, and has close ties with UCC’s Tyndall Institute, Ireland’s largest research centre. Current strengths include optics and photonics, condensed matter theory, experimental quantum topological matter, quantum information technology, laser spectroscopy and astrophysics. Cork is a dynamic and engaging city of ~200,000, recently rated by Lonely Planet as one of the top ten cities to visit in the world. Ireland has a thriving astronomy community and is a member of ESA, the LOFAR radio network, and ESO.

 

Applicants must hold a doctoral qualification in Physics or a closely related area, and a portfolio of significant research accomplishments and publications. The appointee will be required to contribute teaching to the range of BSc degrees offered by the Department of Physics, as well as at postgraduate level. Demonstrated teaching ability is essential, as is ability to generate research funding. Applicants should have research interests and accomplishments specific to astrophysics, gravitational physics or cosmology. It is anticipated that an additional position, with an emphasis on theoretical astrophysics, will be advertised shortly.

Depending on the level of experience, appointment may be made on the following scales:

Professor Salary Scale: €123,449 – €154,507 (Scale B) / €117,276 - €150,712(Scale A) or Professor Scale 2 Salary Scale: €104,313 - €122,510 (Scale B) / €99,097– €116,386 (Scale A)

Salary placement on appointment will be in accordance with public sector pay policy.
