Professional Research Scientists

About Northeastern:
Founded in 1898, Northeastern is a global research university and the recognized leader in experience-driven lifelong learning. Our world-renowned experiential approach empowers our students, faculty, alumni, and partners to create impact far beyond the confines of discipline, degree, and campus.

Our locations—in Boston; Charlotte, North Carolina; London; Portland, Maine; San Francisco; Seattle; Silicon Valley; Toronto; Vancouver; and the Massachusetts communities of Burlington and Nahant—are nodes in our growing global university system. Through this network, we expand opportunities for flexible, student-centered learning and collaborative, solutions-focused research.

Northeastern's comprehensive array of undergraduate and graduate programs— in a variety of on-campus and online formats—lead to degrees through the doctorate in nine colleges and schools. Among these, we offer more than 195 multi-discipline majors and degrees designed to prepare students for purposeful lives and careers.

About the Opportunity:
The Network Science Institute (NetSI) is hiring research scientists of all levels to join a community of interdisciplinary faculty, researchers and graduate students. Positions will range from early career to senior level roles, to include ranks of: Associate research scientist, Senior research scientist, and Principal research scientist. Successful candidates will become a core member of the Network Science Institute, as well as have an affiliation with an academic department commensurate with background and expertise.

Candidates should be interested in advancing network science theory, methods, and/or extending network strategies to novel applications. While research interests will ideally cut across multiple areas, the candidate must be able to intersect with at least one of our current research programs including: the role of cellular and sub-cellular connections in biological function and disease (biological networks); disease spread through populations (epidemiological spreading models); use of digital platforms in shaping opinion, policies, and/or governance (networks for good); coordination of teams, organizations, or communities with shared goals (network performance); development of algorithms and platforms to model behavior of meta populations (network forecasting).

Responsibilities:
Research scientists are expected to contribute to the myriad of existing research programs, as well as develop independent projects, collaborations and funding opportunities. They will be expected to gradually forge their way to research independence, moving from full support to a salary primarily funded through external awards over the course of 3 years. Researchers will be integrated into the vibrant intellectual community of the Institute, including ample opportunities for scientific collaborations, grant proposals, graduate student training/ advising, workshops, etc. The individuals filling these positions will also be expected to actively participate in our community, by organizing and attending scientific talks, workshops, conferences, and engaging with our distinctive PhD program in Network Science by working with doctoral trainees.

Qualifications:
Candidates must have a doctorate degree in a social, biological, information or physical science field. Successful candidates should be able to show outstanding academic achievement, commitment to developing a strong portfolio of research, publications in high impact journals (within one's field) and a track record of externally funded network science-related projects or demonstrated potential for future funding.

Preferred Qualifications:

There will be a preference for candidates who have past experience with (or show the potential for) interdisciplinary collaborations.

Salary Grade:
Compensation and title will depend on prior experience, ranging from early career to senior level roles (see NU pay scale information)
  • Associate research scientist: grade 11
  • Senior research scientist: grade 12
  • Principal research scientist: grade 13

Additional Information:
The Interested candidates should submit the following:

  • Research Statement: The research statement should include a clearly articulated description of proposed research for the period to be spent at the Institute (1-2 pages)

  • Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) Statement: The DEI statement should contain a thoughtful and practical reflection on how to contribute to a diverse and inclusive community of scientific collaboration. (1-2 pages)
  • Curriculum Vitae: Your complete CV should generally cover this requirement. Please note that the list of publications should only include publications that are published or in press. Also, please do not include reprints or any other materials as they will not be included in your file for review.
